UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

Oh no where did the rest of my post go :frowning:

@afrogeisha I see no reason why you won’t get in, frankly. I hope your personal statement(s) reflect your experience(s)/hardship(s)?

It MAY be difficult to declare Public Health, considering the two majors are in different colleges. It would probably be easier to major in a med-related major in L&S (MCB, IGB, etc.) - but it could be possible. I’m not sure.

Well my point was - do u think that stuff is worth mentioning in a personal statement? Im always hesitant about bringing up my personal life in academic settings and I don’t know if that sounds like it can be made into a powerful and dynamic personal statement? Also public health is in L&S!

@afrogeisha Is it? I thought it was in the school of Public Health

Do it. It’s pertinent to who you are, and if you can thoroughly articulate how having such experiences made you grow as a person, they’re bound to love it.

The school of public health only pertains to graduate degrees. The undergraduate major is offered through L&S, although it’s supported by SPH

@afrogeisha Your stats look very good and frankly are extremely amazing for 17. So good for you, you’re very talented. My only possible reservation - and it’s not really a reservation - just throwing it out there: unless you really really really believe you are a phenomenal dancer you might want to think about applying to public health. Ultimately, there will be an audition, right? Sometimes those things are kind of arbitrary. Having said that you do have a huge number of strengths, so if you feel it is your calling, go for it.

Re your two PS: one on your passion (and maybe how you see it defining who you hope to become in the future) and the other on how you overcame the odds - your dropping out, family issues and how it ultimately got a fire going under your belly (which I assume it did). That’s how I would go, anyway.

I honestly think your stats are such that you will get in regardless of your two PS, but still you want to make them as strong as possible.

@afrogeisha Ah. That makes sense. I googled it to be sure (instinct suggested L&S, but I wasn’t positive) and all that popped up was the School of Public Health.

I sort of agree with @lindyk8 - it can really be a hit or miss sort of thing with auditions. Perhaps it would be a good idea to apply as Public Health, and then try to see if you could petition to double major in Dance&PS?

BTW @afrogeisha, I reread my first sentence and when I reread it it sounded like the good for you part could have sounded snotty by accident. It wasn’t. I was really saying you’re very talented. Good for you!

Hey guys, I just wanted to say that I am extremely thankful for this thread and how helpful everyone has been throughout this whole process. The vibe and positivity of this thread gets me excited to know that I could be going to school with some of you guys next year. I hope you all enjoy your break and good luck to everyone making final adjustments on their applications this weekend!

Any mechanical engineering students here
target schoolsUCLA and Berkeley.
Current GPA is 3.78, which is definitely not very competitive based on UCLA transfer profile.

I think I have good EC. I worked at UCLA engineering department as a undergrad researcher in the past summer and participated in various STEM conferences and won awards in poster presentation competitions. (volunteering, tutoring experience no need to say, almost everyone has them)

Do you guys think I have a good chance to get into UCLA and Berkeley? Thank you guys.

I kind of lose my confidence after seeing so many 3.9+ over achievers on this thread haha.
But here is my profile:

major: Mechanical engineering
Current GPA is 3.78, which is definitely not very competitive based on UCLA transfer profile.

Ditto to what @uctransfer2016 said! I love checking in here and reading the responses (even if they are not relevant to me). Thank you all for being so positive and best of luck

@goldencub @lindyk8 Thank you guys! I really appreciate that.

Also, there actually is no audition for TDPS department. I went up to Cal in August and spoke with the UG advisor about it because I’m definitely lacking in experience as compared to other dancers considering I’m a lot younger and also started dancing later. The program is based a lot more in performance and kinesthetic theory and how performance related to culture and other social factors, rather than a conservatory that is based on actual technique and performance. It’s a bit like UCLA’s World Arts and Cultures department (which I’m applying to as well - but their Dance major under WAC has a bit more of a focus on technique, which makes me slightly hesitant.)

And i concur with @uctransfer2016 . I’ve been stalking threads like this since I started fall 2014 and I’m glad to finally be a part of one. I hope to see you all up in Cal next fall

@Leo622 Your stats are not at all bad. Research exp is really huge and may be something you have over other applicants. I don’t know much about engineering at Berkeley, but just make sure your PS are riveting - give them a reason to want you.

Guys, quick question:
So I will have 2 prereq courses left for Berkeley Psych, both of which I am currently enrolled in to take in Spring of 2016. Is it safe to apply like this? Or should I apply as another major in L&S which I have ALL the classes done already? (ex. Sociology) and then just declare Psych if I go to Berkeley?

@themightybicycle I think psych is a capped major so that is a tough question my friend!

@themightybicycle It’s fine. They just need to be completed by spring.

Hey how are you guys formatting your personal statements? When I enter them, formatting doesn’t allow indentation so I was advised to just press enter between each paragraph. What do you think?

@blsuctransfer This is what I advise if you want to at least keep a facsimile of formatting structure. Add a / at the end of each paragraph./ That way if it ends up being a blob of text at least the reader can see the break points./ It does not add characters, by the way.

@blsUCtransfer The PS will show up as a massive block of text to the reader. Don’t format it.

@lindyk8 's daughter put a ‘/’ after each paragraph to signify a block in the text - do it if you’d like, but it’s been stressed that it shows up as a large block of text, and I’ve been advised to not write in paragraphs.
