@goldencub what do you know about the co-ops? I applied a while ago.
@afrogeisha I know next to nothing. I’ve heard they can be fun, some are better than others, that sort of thing. Essentially it’s a large house with a bunch of people, and each person is required to do chores, cook, etc.
At least, that’s what I’ve heard, and I’m sure you’ve heard that too. It’s much more affordable than living in the dorms.
One of my friends is living in a house near campus where they rent out rooms. Its really small but relatively cheap
I really want to know the answer to this too since I’m in a similar situation Dx HELPPP GUYZ
I don’t think they will though
@Molisha and @resonanx I don’t think it will matter at this point. You can try mentioning it in the comment section when you submit your fall grades on the TAU, but otherwise I personally don’t think it will do much.
It’s hard to get a spot in the Co-ops since they essentially half the price of a triple in the dorms and a lot of people want to save that money. They also are not for everyone since there is a heavy substance use vibe and they, as previously mentioned, require a workshift to compensate for the low rent costs. The apartments have a workshift of 6 hours per semester which is nothing in the long run but the houses have a significantly larger workshift of 5 hours per week. I don’t recommend the houses at all if your in a intensive major / have a significant internship as those five hours a week add up fast.
That said, IMHO the apartments (Fenwick & Rochdale) are a steal and the smaller houses (Davis, Wolf, Wilde, Ridge) are great with an intimate built-in social circle. The larger houses (CZ, Cloyne, Stebbins, Loth, Castro, HiP) are a hit or miss depending on your personality.
Bang for your buck-wise, I’d rank them as Wada / Martinez / Channing-Bowditch > Co-op Apartments >> Smaller Co-ops >> Larger Co-ops > International-House > High Rises >>> Clark Kerr / Foothill / Stern. I’d also place most off-campus housing between the Larger Co-ops and the I-House but it’s very YMMV.
@sugarbabies3 That’s exactly what I thought :((
@SDGoldenBear uhhh my friend doesn’t have to do any of that in the place she stays at and its literally a block from campus
@Molisha, Workshift is mandatory at all the Co-ops so…she isn’t at a Co-op then.
See: https://www.bsc.coop/housing/general-info-housing/workshift
@SDGoldenBear I thought you were trying to say ALL the houses were co-ops haha
One of my friends lives in the larger co-ops that you mentioned. She told me she pays $850/month. And yes, you do have to work, but it did not seem that work-intensive… maybe because there were also so many other students living with her.
With that being said, if any of you guys know, can you also throw around some numbers regarding various living situations? Am I being naive to think that there could be anything available lower than $850/month? How do apartments look like? Any of your friends’/family members’ experiences?
Thanks so much. I’ve honestly been considering these past few days, if I even get in, how will I be able to afford the housing So I’m trying to get as much information as possible.
@tooweirdyo Testimonial (not me): Apartment on south side of campus -(2 bedroom 1 bath), ~$650 per person, two people in each room.
Check on craigslist towards the spring. There are a lot of deals, but it’s not easy to get those spots. As far as I’n aware, a decent double will cost around $600-800, and a single will likely be $1000+
My sister lives a few blocks on the south side of campus and pays ~$550 a month for her own room and lives in a 2 bedroom with 2 other roommates. She found her apartment through the FB page for Berkeley students. You should check that out too!
Does anyone else wake up from a nightmare where they were denied and then immediately start planning their letter of appeal? :(( :(( :((
When will they send us a MyAdmissions portal?
So far I have gotten one from:
UCSD
UCD
UCLA
@RAHforHEE I’ve also gotten UCLA and UCD. But I haven’t gotten UCSD yet :’(
I honestly haven’t been thinking about it much since the transfer deadline was extended and they might just be holding off a bit.
@Molisha Do you use Gmail? I thought I didn’t get anything from them, either but it was sent to my promotions tab! There is no MyAdmissions portal given in this email, however. It only says:
Dear ******,

@RAHforHEE I do use gmail >>>> ooooooooooooo that is good to know haha
So i posted a couple days ago regarding my chances at getting into ucb for business. I was estimating my gpa based on if i got a B in the class i just finished. Was super worried about the final. Well my grade just came in and i got the A so my gpa will be around a 3.85 instead of a 3.7 now. I couldnt be happier. Have u guys received the letter stating that they received your application? I received it from ucsb, uci and ucla but not berkely yet.
