@CaliBoi4567 Thanks!! As clarification, for UCLA I meant I probably got in on the first read, because I’ve heard that they do first reads, make decisions on some people and send out supplemental requests to the rest of applicants (who are borderline), and do further reads after that. I did not receive a letter of recommendation request from Berkeley… probably rejected but yolo. I know people from my school who have lower unweighted GPAs than I do but received Berkeley Regents, so I guess the process really is a crapshoot.
any1 know how competitive materials engineering program is?
I have been accepted to UCSC, UCSB, UCD, & UT Austin. I got rejected from UCLA, but received a LOR from Berkeley… my stats are kinda low but I wrote really good essays and have a lot of community service hours and extracurriculars!
OOS
ACT: 26 32 writing (28 English 27 science 25 math 25 reading)
GPA Capped UC: 3.97
60+ community service hours & work experience
President of student body
Leadership experience
Mentioned how I had to always help take care of my family because of my chronically ill mom in my essays… LOR was written by a realllly reliable and intelligent teacher!
PLEASE PLEASE GIVE ME INPUT! Anyone thanks so much! GOODLUCK to all!
@bellabiology99 your stats are kinda low but Berkeley tends to value ECs in volunteer work and leadership roles. Did you apply to Bio?
@nervous17yearold yes bio !!
@bellabiology99 oh nice me too! a LOR request tends to indicate that you’re borderline but it sounds like your teacher sent a strong letter… I think it may help to have a few subject tests to support your interest in your indicated major but you can always get in undeclared. I hope things turn out well for you March 30!
Bellabiology99 Cal really looks at applications from hollistic perspective not as much at UCLA, so dont let UCLAs mistake mess with you, dont give up hope. Good luck!
So no one knows anything about the college of chem’s competitiveness? I haven’t heard much about it, really quite a mystery :/.
I did, and I got the similar one for UC santa cruz for the science department. Hopefully that’s good news?
Yeah same here. Hopefully we get into CAL!
This may be a dumb question but does UCB waitlist applicants? I know the UC system is sort-of a rebel compared to the admissions processes of other colleges, so I’m jw
@tenaciousteen113 Yep, they have a waitlist iirc
Getting a LOR could mean anything - You could be in SURE, MAYBE, REJECT category. Although chances of getting a LOR request are lower for SURE and REJECT categories (but not zero).
If you did not get a LOR request then you are certainly NOT a MAYBE because 100% of MAYBE applicants get the LOR request.
Source: A video of UC Berkeley explaining the LOR process from last year. This is a new experiment that UCB is trying out.
@cricketfan Makes me feel simultaneously worse and better having not received a LOR request.
@JuicyMango Berkeley excels in chemistry so I assume the college is quite competitive, even if there aren’t as many applicants as there would be for, perhaps, engineering.
@roonilwazlib100 I went on a Berkeley tour and they said the College of Chemistry was #1 in the nation, so I was surprised when no one I know applied to the school. But that also means that the applicants that did apply are top students, so I’m sure it’s still competitive in its own right.
@JuicyMango Exactly. It probably does not receive too many applicants, but those who do apply are strong contenders.
My roommate here is a MatSci E. He got a 2400 on his SAT.
@CalStudentOski What college is that major in?
JuicyMango i believe it is the smallest school at Cal. It is pretty selective about the same as engineering. Its kind of weird how their chemical engineering major is in the school of chemistry most of the time it is in the school of engineering.
