UC Berkeley AP Credit Discussion 2019

I’m going to be a freshman at Cal this fall, coming in undecided. I’d like to pursue a double major in CS and Haas. I’m wondering about exactly which of my AP credits I can apply to my future curriculum in hopes of placing out of some of the more basic classes. If someone could clarify for me that’d be great. Thanks in advance!

As of now, I’m fairly familiar with the AP policy for econ/calc/comp sci in that AP Macro/Micro, Cal BC, and Comp Sci A will help me place of courses for the business school prerequisites, comp sci introductory courses, and math prereqs. I received 5’s on Calc, Comp Sci, and Micro. 4 on Macro.

The other APs I’ve taken are as follows
5’s
English Lang
Psych
Stats
Human Geo
Chinese Lang

4’s
Physics C: Mech
Physics C: E&M
Spanish Lang
World History

This year I’m taking Chem, Gov & Politics, and APUSH, anticipating a 4 or 5 on each.

To my understanding, the specific AP credits I’ll be able to apply to my course selection are dependent upon which courses are required for my major, however apparently there’s also breadth classes in the mix to consider and perhaps other things I don’t yet know about. Any help is appreciated!

http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/2081956-uc-berkeley-letters-and-sciences-ap-credit-policy.html may help you (reply #1 gives general L&S rules, replies #2 and #3 give links to departments regarding specific subject credit for their majors and advanced placement).

Note that AP credit is not accepted for the L&S (or business) 7-course breadth requirement, but may be accepted for some of the other L&S requirements (reading and composition, quantitative reasoning, foreign language).

Based on your listed AP scores, these requirements can be fulfilled:

5 on calculus BC: Math 1A and 1B for CS major; L&S QR; for business, need to take another math course (Math 54 covers that and an additional math requirement for CS major, but you may need to self-study some introductory differential equations that is covered in Math 1B but may not have been in your AP calculus course)
5 on English language: R&C A (e.g. English R1A); need to take R&C B
5 on Chinese or 4 on Spanish: L&S FL; see departments for placement into more advanced courses
4 on economics micro and macro: Economics 1 for business or economics major or prerequisite to other economics courses
5 on psychology: Psychology 1 for psychology major or prerequisite to other psychology courses

Note: CS A does not fulfill any requirements for the CS major, although it has some content overlap with CS 61B.

Wow, thanks! That helps a ton.

What is the minimum score necessary to get credit for AP Psych?

You get graduation credit with a 3 for AP Psych, 4 or 5 to possibly get subject credit. In most instances you could start at the next Psych class. There are exceptions. For example, if you wanted to be a Data Science Major you cannot use AP Psych to get credit for the lower division domain emphasis for cognitive science or human behavior emphases - college classes need to be taken. But you could probably take 3 upper division classes instead of one lower two upper and in the end the math would work out the same.

Hi, I’m trying to figure out how many units I earned. I have 3 pending AP scores coming this July, but I will give an approximate guess as to what I think I got:

Already received:
AP Human Geography - 4
AP European History - 4
AP Macroeconomics - 5
AP Microeconomics - 4
AP English Language and Composition - 4

Pending, simulated score:
AP Chinese Language and Culture - 3
AP Psychology - 5
AP Chemistry - 4

Can someone help me convert what this would get in units for Letters and Science?
Thank you.

OTOH you get around 32 graduation credits.
As far as subject credits you would probably get them for Psych 1, Econ 1, probably Chem 1 and 1A, and the first English R&C class.

Re: #5

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/exam-credit/ap-credits/index.html indicates that you could get about 32 semester units for your AP scores. But note that if you take a college course duplicating the AP credit, you will not get credit for both.

See http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/2081956-uc-berkeley-letters-and-sciences-ap-credit-policy.html for subject credit.
