Hey, so hears the deal. My parents made me apply to EECS at Berkeley while I wanted to apply to CS. I know EECS is nearly impossible to get into while it is easier to get into CS in the College of L&S. I was wondering if in my appeal, I would be able to appeal to Cal CS instead of EECS. My UC GPA is a 4.4 and my SAT is a 2190. I have also published a research paper at an international conference and was going to submit my abstract and conclusion of the paper in my appeal. I am relatively confident that I would’ve had a much better chance of admission if I applied in CS instead of EECS. Would it be feasible to get into CS at Cal even if I originally applied in EECS? I also know I have great letters of rec.
I’m interested in this as well.
bump???
So, I take it you didn’t get into Berkeley?
An appeal generally is used if there was a technical error (CB didn’t send scores, registrar at the high school made an error, etc.). It is not used because you didn’t like their rejection. IT doesn’t matter if you now think you should have applied to a different department.
They don’t have room to accept all 80-100K applications, that’s why there are rejection letters.
They intentionally do not allow EECS and other engineering applicants to select a second choice major precisely because they don’t want to fill L&S spots with said students.
You could probably fill half of L&S with near perfect stat kids rejected by EECS alone, but how would that help the college which is trying to balance out a wide breadth of programs? They would end up with a huge pile of inter-college transfer apps at the end of freshman year… Or in the case of CS, they would have to move major-declaration requirements up significantly and then be left with a bunch of students who didn’t make the cut looking to transfer out of the University all together.
There is a method to the madness of offering CS in both colleges and not allowing high schoolers to apply to both. There are costs and benefits that balance out. If they allowed rejected EECS applicants to essential reapply to L&S it would defeat the purpose of the system they have in place.
Sure, but would they make an exception if one would to ask in the appeal?
^^^^^^reread @YZamyatin’s post^^^^^.
Your information is not a technical error because you “think you applied to the wrong department”.
Move on to another school.
If they make an exception for one person they’d have to make it for everyone
I hope you have some other options, because you will need them.
Ok, I understand what you are all saying, but would it be feasible to switch into econ. I have recently won a national investment competition and there were many things I was unable to put on my UC app. Would an appeal to the econ major be more feasible than an appeal to the CS. I plan on double majoring in them both anyway. I have read articles in which people appealed NOT because of errors on their transcript and such, but just because they had new information and a compelling appeal letter.
What’s the point of arguing? If you don’t like the opinions posted here, ignore them (mine opinion included) and go do your own thing. If you believe the “articles in which people appealed NOT because of errors on their transcript and such,” go ahead and write the “compelling appeal letter.” And then if you are really nice, come back to this thread and post the update when you have the result.
