***UC Berkeley Class of 2020 Applicant Discussion***

@Jackson9854 @happywaterbottle http://admissions.berkeley.edu/whatsnew :

“In 2016 a small number of freshman applicants will receive notification of their decision in February. Most of these students will be nominees for Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarships, a process that has traditionally been initiated during this time of year; the difference this year is that those students and some others are receiving admission offers at the same time. The majority of freshman applicants still will receive their decisions on March 24, 2016, via the MAP@Berkeley portal.”

It says most will be nominees for Regents’; however, I do think it will be a huge majority (say 2000 get accepted, maybe all but 20-30 will be nominees). That is just my speculation, though.

They are releasing students who are getting invited for a Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship interview tomorrow through e-mail. This also means you are accepted if you get this invitation. (source: I currently attend Cal and am part of an org related to Scholarship office!)

@cherryrae Do you have any hint of the approximate time the emails will go out?

@whynotnow I’m not sure about the time for this year, but last year I received mine around 2PM!

@waddups Thank you!

were getting close!

ALMOST!

OMG Starting to get more nervous! I just want to say good luck to everyone here. Whatever happens, happens for the best :slight_smile:

My guess is that early admittees will be in-state regents invitees, oos and international regents awardees (who are usually notified along with the rest in march, and not feb), and possibly a few oos/international applicants who almost got regents but ended up not being chosen.

My reasoning is that all the top in-state candidates will likely be regents invitees already, and given that oos/international regents process has no interview, there are probably a few borderline regents applicants (ie top applicants) who they’d like to woo by giving early admission.

People keep saying that international students will be notified for Regents with everyone on March 24.
Is this right? Aren’t some international students getting a notification tomorrow?

@Jado17 Yea. Some Mastercard Scholarship applicants will be notified.

@10s4life This page too. I am like checking in every hour.

Hi, as a Cal Alum who reads our Alumni newsletter regularly, saw the announcement 2,000 applicants for the class of 2020 will be admitted via email today. I pray everyone on this thread gets in today! My alma mater needs heartfelt applicants like you all so you can do well and give back to the #1 public university in the world. Cal needs you!! Fingers crossed, and prayers said, for all of you. Go Bears, Make Good Decisions Bears!

So running some numbers, according to Cal, 82,539 new freshman applied. Based on figures from last year, and adding a little bit more for this year due to increased enrollment, of that 82,539 about 15,000 will be international students who do not qualify for the Regents and Chancellors scholarship. I am not sure if transfers do, but from the announcement it looks like they don’t because it said it was for “prospective freshman.” So subtracting 15,000 international students that meant there are about 67,539 domestic applicants. They are notifying 2,000 today, so 2,000/67,539 means that the notification rate will be to about the top 3% of applicants. Tell me if I am wrong, I know I am making some assumptions here, so correct me if need be. I just felt like playing with some numbers.

Do you guys mean the international students won’t be included in the 2000 today?feel disappointed about this news… if I am wrong, please tell me, cause I am not quite sure about the policy…

International students ARE eligible for Regents and Chancellor’s according to Cal website, “International, and transfer candidate’s admission files are reviewed by the Committee on Scholarships, Honors, and Financial Aid”.

So yes, some internationals MAY receive an acceptance email today!

@skywalker11, thanks for the correction. I was looking at a page that listed scholarships for international students and did not see Regents listed. But I now found what young @skywalker11 posted.

So @tranferxperk, it looks like you’re good. Sorry for the scare.

So then that should put the percentage at 2000/82539 = top 2.4%.

Less than 3 hours Til the results come out!

One question. Top 2% in what context? Holistically right? Because if not, regents is basically flipping holistic admissions the bird

A friend of mine (a Regents Finalist) once said that the finalists are those students that seem more promising and likely to promote great changes at Berkeley and in the world, in a more general viewpoint. The essays are, therefore, perhaps the single most important part of the selection process, followed by extracurriculars, GPA, coursework, test scores and other factors.

2% in an holistic context, then.
