UC Berkeley Economics? Or Should I Change?

Hello, I am going to apply for Fall 10 to UC Berkeley as an Economics major, but I was wondering if I would be more competitive if I applied for a different major within L&S at Berkeley because I am afraid I may get a B in my first Calculus class. I have all the necessary courses for Political Economy and Political Science. Would I be better of switching my major there and posting my major as something else for Berkeley?
GPA: 3.8 (Honors Student, but no TAP for Berkeley)
GPA(With B in Calculus): Approximently 3.77
APs: 5 Gov, 5 Macroecon, 4 Microecon, 5 Environmental, 3 Euro History, 4 American History, 3 English Lit, 4 Statistics
ECs: Phi Theta Kappa, Town Hall Meeting, AYSO Referee, Two Research Papers for Honors council presentation at UCI.
Work/per week: 24 Hours at Dry Cleaner, 2 Hours Statistics Tutor, (4) Personal Business of parting out cars and selling parts on eBay.

I don't know if this is important, but I just graduated High School although I had about 30 units without AP's at local Community College.

It probably would be safer to go for another major. Economics is going to be slightly more competitive than the others and they are going to look more closely at the math grade. It’s hard to know whether 3.77 will be enough.

However, if you really want to study economics, it might be worth it just to go for it.

You probably should go for it and focus a lot of energy on bringing up your math grade. That would be what I would do, unless if your grade so low that’s not likely to succeed.

To be frank, the chances I can pull off an A in Calculus are quite slim, I think I just overloaded by one class this semester. I’m hoping for the best, but I think your right that the Calculus grade is going to be the one that makes me or breaks me. Maybe I can write an excellent essay to bolster my chances.

I guess I can’t complain as long as I can get into UC Davis, which is still an amazing school.

Thanks for the advice.
