I’m a Pennsylvania resident stuck between Penn State Schreyer and Berkeley for a major in math. Schreyer with the scholarships they have given me is significantly cheaper than Berkeley, but my parents assure me they will find a way to pay for either. With a math major, I know Berkeley will provide a better education and post college career, but I just don’t know if it’s worth the cost. Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I’m completely torn!
future potential is much higher in Berkeley, better opportunities and exposure as well
Is this “we have the money” assurance or “we’ll remortgage our house and take $140k in loans” assurance? I’d get specifics before choosing.
It’s a “we have the money” situation, or at least the majority of it.
Your parents have a quarter million dollars in a college fund for you?
I’d still pick Schreyer (then head to Berkeley for grad school) because you’ll get lots of personal attention and opportunities you won’t get at Berkeley, but there’s no denying your classes will push you and will be very intense (if that’s what you want) + better weather in SF.
I vote for Penn.
I just don’t think you need to saddle your parents with a quarter of a million dollars in loans.
Our state regents in California voted this past month to increase tuition another 3.5% for non-residents. Your don’t know if that trend will continue.
Penn State worked out well for John Urschel, a former football player now pursuing his PhD in math at MIT.
