UC Berkeley Out of State Transfer

Hello!

I’m currently a sophomore at American University in Washington D.C. looking to transfer to UCB. A little back story, I was a CA community college student last year but then I transferred to AU and its kind of a long story but I now want to transfer to UCB my junior year. I know that Berkeley weighs transfer student’s gpa pretty heavily and as my gpa isn’t that great and I am not a CA community college student but I have pretty strong ecs so I wanted to see what my chances might be.

Stats:

GPA: 3.36 (Hopefully a 3.6 by the end of the year)

ECs:
Co-Founder and Political Director of Orange County High School Democrats
Founder and President of my cc College Democrats Club
Running Start’s YWPL Alumni
Deputy National Outreach Directior for California College Democrats
Fellow at NextGen America
Internship at Ulwelling, Siddiqui LLP
Dean’s List at CCC
Internship at Running Start
Member of AU Dems
Member of AU’s Student Government
(Second semester I will continue to be more involved and will have another internship)

Any advice is welcome and very much wanted!!

Even if your parents are CA residents, this GPA would t get you into UC Berkeley or UCLA.

Although these are 2017 Transfer GPA’s, this will help you gauge your chances. The link shows UC campus with major and UC Admit GPA ranges: https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major

Overall UC GPA admit range for UCB Transfers was 3.65-3.94 which will make it a Reach. I would look at some of the other UC campuses instead where your GPA puts within range such as UC Irvine, Davis, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Riverside and Merced.

What is wrong with staying at American?

@ucbalumnus I just realized that it isn’t really for me. I can accomplish my political goals in San Francisco while also saving money and living in my home state. I was a bit naive and immature when it came to applying to college and only applied to American because I thought it would be the best school for me but i’ve now realized that Berkeley is where I would thrive the most and where I should be.

@MYOS1634 do they look at my current gpa after one year of college or do they look at my gpa after this first semester of my second year when considering my application?

@Gumbymom for my intended major of Interdisciplinary Studies it says that the admit GPA range was 3.6-3.92 but that the enroll GPA range was 3.35-3.76. Does that help my chances at all that the enroll range is at 3.35 and on with my gpa at 3.36?

It only means that those admitted with a 3.35 (ie., By the skin of their teeth) are more likely to attend than those admitted with a 3.75+ who must have lots of choices.
Apply but don’t count on it, and make sure to get as many A’s as you can at American, since it’s a selective 4- year university and it’ll be considered more representative than what you did at community college. In addition, remember that transfers from OOS universities have no priority so your odds are lower than from a CA CC.
So, take advantage of everything eeican has to offer - special classes, internships…
