UC Berkeley Sociology Major

Hello everyone!
This is my first post so I’m looking forward to hear what responses people have  I am currently a sophomore at cc and I am hoping to transfer to UC Berkeley as a Sociology major. I am just curious as to whether this major is impact at Cal and what is the minimum gpa to get into this major. My gpa is 3.5 but I have a year left until I apply so I’m really going to work hard to boost it up! Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much

You should be applying this November if you plan to start at a UC in Fall 2016.

You’re a California CC student, right? Cal is the hardest UC to transfer to so your GPA, ECs, essays all need to be spectacular.

Go to http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/ for UC Transfer specific help and alot of support. You should find some answers there. Good luck!

Hello, thanks for replying! I am planning to apply next year for Fall 2017. I still need two more years at my cc to complete all my pre-reqs and igetc requirements (3 years total). As for EC I work three jobs, one as a sales associate at my local mall and two on campus, a library student assistant and a peer mentor. I recently started volunteering as a Health Ambassador for the Second Harvest Food Bank and as a community health advocate for a cancer center for women in Oakland. I enjoy them both very much and feel like they relate to my major because I’m working in a social services type of environment. I don’t want to get all sentimental and dramatic but my family has been through a lot and I’ve seen stuff growing up that has really affected me such as domestic violence and my uncle going to prison and other personal stuff. For my personal statement I was thinking about discussing how the events in my life has shaped me to continue my studies despite the difficulties of coming from a middle class Latino family who has no American education and gives me little support. But we will see when the time comes how I want to write it. Until then I’m just trying to get my gpa up!!

Great ECs! Keep up the good work. Don’t limit yourself to Cal!

Thank you! Appreciate all the help!

Great job so far - a 3.5 and rigorous EC schedule is hard to manage. Be sure to apply elsewhere and take advantage of TAG (Transfer Guarantee). How about Davis and Irvine?

Hello! I’ve never considered those schools but I will definitely look into them. Thank you for your suggestions!
