I got the borderline supplement. I usually don’t like stats post but since you’re asking… I’m definitely not Berkeley EECS caliber either (if anything way below) but my personal statements (it made one my readers cry) were really compelling and I talked a lot about why I chose my major and how I got into EECS…

UC GPA: 3.9ish? ): Uncapped GPA: 4.3+ish.
SAT: 2040, 1390 M+CR (one sitting)
SAT IIs: 740 Bio-M, 710 Math 2c, 710 US History
ACT: 32
Rigorous senior course load

Extracurriculars focused more on quality than quantity… I had few activities but the ones I did have I devoted a large amount of time and energy and I really loved doing them… held some leadership positions but nothing extraordinary. Had a job.
First generation college student (perhaps my hook?)

Thanks. sorry for asking. just wondering though how your UC gpa is a 3.9 but your uncapped is all the way up at a 4.3? how many ap’s/honor’s did u take? are those honors UC approved?
sorry for asking so many questions. U can PM me this if u want

hey arandom I also got it for eecs and my stats are even lower than angies.
my gpa is 3.5 and weighted is about 3.9-4.0
Sat:1780 and I didn’t take sat IIs.
My extracurruclars weren’t that much either… I was only in two clubs.
I have no idea why i got it

If that’s the case I think it might be my personal statements. I wrote about my family problem and how both my uncle and mom were diagnosed with cancer. Do you think that’s probably the reason why? Would the personal statement be something strong enough to make me borderline? I know eecs is really hard to get in and I thought Berkeley was a super reach school so I put that major for fun, but now that I got the questionnaire my hopes are kind of raised.

arandom, your UC GPA is capped, giving you the extra weight for only 8 semesters worth of honors/AP/IB classes. So that’s only 4 classes worth of the extra point you get (assuming each class is 2 semesters long).
Not counting my senior or freshman year, I took 20 semesters worth of UC approved honors/AP/IB classes (was a IB diploma candidate up until this year so I had my fair share of IB classes) so my uncapped is higher than my capped naturally. Now my freshman year is also loaded with honors classes that AREN’T UC approved, so if they were my uncapped would be higher :(

so I hate to get ahead of myself, but even if you have a low SAT and you get the questionnaire is there still a good chance of getting accepted once you get this thing?

@seniorcat - Filling out the supplement fully, clearly and avoid using one-sentence answers will only help–not hurt-- your admission offer. In other words, there still is a good chance. It’s when you don’t fill it out-- is when it may hurt your chances. Basically, you are borderline, and they want to know a little more about you to convince them you deserve an admission offer. There are plenty of applicants who don’t get that chance.

@seniorcat - I’ve heard of one student who didn’t fill it out, and did not get in. I know of one person who filled it out completely and got in.

@sfmom im just worried they wont see my fall semester grades since they came out way after the 10 day deadline, ughh lets hope the essays are what they mainly look at?

anyways, thanks, that’s reassuring to some extent :)

yes i submitted them about 3 weeks ago, so do you know if they still look back to check if you updated it, even thought it was way after te 10 day deadline?

They aren’t done making final choices until almost the day that decisions are announced. You have weeks yet where they are going through the borderline pool and the talent and the other pools to select their target number of admission offers. They have some sizeable part of the job that is complete - the definite yes pile and the larger definite no pile – but the ones on the edge or the ones who might be interesting enough for some reason to put in, those are the subject of attention for admissions right now.

Even in that group, they have probably already taken some and moved them to the definite yes pile. If they sent a supplemental questionnaire because they thought something was interesting about a candidate, and the answers confirmed their belief, that factor may already have made the candidate an accept. The rest will be debated and debated until they lock in the final decisions and turn them loose.

One was the general questionnaire and the other was for disabilities, because I emphasized my autism in my personal statements. I answered each question on the disabled one in great length while the general one I wrote 1-2 sentence responses.

@seniorcat - As answered by @rider730, if you answered the supplement on time, they probably had a chance to review it and have made a decision already. I don’t think your Fall grades were the end all. I think they really looked at the answers to the questions. Even if you did submit it not far after the 10-day deadline, I assume they will see your fall grades eventually before a decision is made.

@knight932012 - I’m thinking you have even a “better” chance since you answered 2 supplements. A lot of applicants don’t get another shot, let alone a 3rd shot.

Good luck to both of you! If you do hear (hopefully some good news), please come back and post your outcome. :)
