UC Berkeley Transfer Admission

Hello,

As of this fall, I'll be a freshman in community college; I plan on transferring to UC Berkeley in two years as a physics and/or math major.

I've reached a bit of a dilemma; I need to have Calculus I completed by the end of this semester in order to fit the necessary math/physics courses into my schedule over the next two years.

However, all of the Calculus I courses offered at colleges near me are closed. I was thinking about enrolling in Coastline Community College's online Calculus I course...would UC Berkeley have a problem with that? assist.org tells me that CCC's regular Calc I course meets Berkeley's articulation agreement, but I spoke with a counselor from CCC who told me that UCB doesn't think too highly of online courses.

What do you suggest I do?

First of all, check if CCC distinguishes between on-campus and web courses on transcripts (e.g. Math 1 vs Math 1W, or just Math 1 for both). If they don’t, then Berkeley wouldn’t really have a way to know whether your class was online or on-campus. For example, I took Psych 1 this summer at Ventura college, and my transcript should say PSY V01 (without indication of it being a web class).

Even if they DO distinguish, I’d suggest enrolling in that class right away before it fills up completely, seeing as it might be your only option.

In case you’d rather take the class in an actual classroom, go to the first days of as many of the lecture sections as you can, and tell the professors you really need to get into the class. You may or may not get a spot in one of the classes. If you don’t, you still have the online class; if you do get a spot in one of the on-campus classes, then remember to drop the online class (you don’t want an F for forgetting to drop it).

PS: I’m skeptical about what your counselor said about Berkeley not thinking highly of online courses. I’ve never heard that before.

Don’t ever take a CCC counselor’s word as law. They’ve made so many mistakes in my 2 years that it’s unbelievable.

I took Calc 1-3 online at Coastline and I am transferring to Cal in 3 weeks.

One word of caution… online math classes are VERY easy which can end up being detrimental to you later on. FTF math classes tend to hammer concepts into your head (esp as a math/phys major) since you’re exposed to more in-class math. Subconsciously you end up learning more than in online classes where minimal work can usually get you an A.

P.S. Online courses don’t show up any differently than regular courses on transcripts so there’s really no way to ever know.

I am transferring next year and hope to get into ucb for math major. My current GPA is 3.56 and I got C in one of my calc class, others i got A and Bs. Do you think I can make it to ucb?
