UC Berkeley vs GA Tech

I havent gotten accepted by Berkeley yet, but I am accepted by GT and am starting to think about which I'd attend if I get accepted into Berkeley. I am a CA resident, so I would be in state for Berkeley. But I've been hearing terrible things about the budget crisis the UCs are in. Is GT in a similar crisis? Also GT's co-op program sounds great, something I am very interested in participating in during college. Does Berkeley have a large program where it is fairly easy to get a co-op? And my major is chemical engineering. Also I live about an hr away from Berkeley, for my entire life. I'm honestly not sure if I want to stay in the same place or go somewhere new.

If you live in California, why would you go to GeorgiaTech? The budget crisis is completely exaggerated, GeorgiaTech will be a public education at a private school cost, and Berkeley is clearly superior to GeorgiaTech.

I would also like to add that just because you’ve been accepted to GeorgiaTech doesn’t mean you’ll be accepted into Berkeley. There is quite a gap between the two schools despite similarly ranked engineering programs. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

Given that lunaticchemist wants to major in chemical engineering, I found this contradiction within the same post amusing.

wrt co-op at Berkeley, I suggest contacting the department if there is no information on their website.

In state for Berkeley is really a no brainer here. Unless GT becomes considerably cheaper than going to Berkeley, go to UCB.

Engineering @ Cal is a no-brainer.

Berkeley is probably cheaper. Thanks guys, I’ll be waiting for Berkeley’s decision!

Probably cheaper? instate at a UC is cheaper.

I’d go with Berkeley.

“In state for Berkeley is really a no brainer here.”

I agree. GTech is a great school, but Berk is amazing for the cost. Keep your costs down for UG and you’ll be happy at graduation.

I’d go for Berkeley for the same cost. I’d go for Berkeley even if it’s 10 grand per year more expensive than GA Tech.

Over 50 grand for the whole 4 years is debatable, however.
