UCSD vs GTech

Hey,
I payed the enrollment deposit in both UC San Diego & GeorgiaTech[major:mechanical engineering].However, I'm leaning towards UCSD coz my family & I are moving to the U.S. (CA) for the first time(I've visited before but never resided). So my parents & I are little apprehensive about me going to GTech since I have relatives only in CA.My question was : Is GTech thaaaaat much better(prestigious) than UCSD (well in undergrad engineering rankings its way better) that i should consider going n living in a place where I dont have ne support for miles(if not states)....and i get to visit family once a year.If anybody here thinks its that much more prestigious (and its worth it) than UCSD then I dont mind going to GTech at all. Also financially both schools work out almost the same,I pay $8000 more in GTech at the end of 4 years.Any input would be really appreciated.

I think that the two, overall, have fairly equal names. In MechE Georgia Tech wins, but I imagine that in the West overall, you'll find people much more responsive to UCSD (besides those who know engineering very well or something). The MechE at UCSD is fairly good, yes? If you do well there you will be fine. I've read that Georgia Tech has difficulty with people graduating in just four years for various reasons. The environments seem to be different, if that matters to you. I don't know about hiring practices and how GTech does relative to UCSD. Maybe sakky or calx have some idea.

mech engineering is better at georgia tech, but ucsd is more prestigious, ranked significantly better, and has a better rep, especially on the west coast. plus the location is far far better. i know i would rather be at a better overall school and be in san diego than be in georgia at a lower ranked school. the only thing that would make me even consider georgia tech would be its stellar mech engineering program. but still, i would much rather be at the better overall university and be in san diego. i would argue georgia tech overall is in about the same league as uci or other mid teir uc's, probably not equivalent to ucsd or other top tier uc's.

Well ucchris ur right about the overall rankings part......what's making me thing about GTech is that I want to do engineering and in the undergraduate engineering rankings GTech is ranked 6th(a great thing coz this list has both public n private univs) and is just behind Berkeley(4th) and MIT,Stanford & the like while UCSD is ranked way behind at 24 [at grad level GTech:same postn,UCSD:12 :) ]...........also even if this is not an important point but I somehow dont like the look of the UCSD engineering school.....as for the GTech it seems fantastic(I've had a look thru google n their own site). However I may be wrong.........nebody wud know how both the campuses size up against each other(aesthetically speaking).I've always wanted to go to a college which has the architecture and the atmoshphere like Stanford(i didnt apply:too expensive)........ok sorry for deviating fromthe main topic of discussion.......WHICH IS MORE PRESTIGIOUS??????also i plan to work after graduating (to earn for grad school)so where would I get more $$ and a better job ??

Question is where do you want to work?

Well I've never actually lived in the U.S. for more than 2 months so I really dont know.......I guess neplace where I'll get a great job as a mechatronics(robotics) engineer.....if I go to GTech does that mean I wont get a job in CA or something??

Id go to UCSD. I love San Diego and they are the same academically for engineering.
