just wondering if anyone knows, is your position on the waitlist based on rankings or first come first serve?
It’s based on how things turn out for Cal in the future. If not as many people who were admitted into for example history, chose to attend they’ll let their most qualified history waitlists off.
So as far as I can find from reddit to college confidential that there are extremely few, extremely few transfer waitlist acceptances.
I got waitlisted for CSE, lol. r u all transfers?
Yup. And you are?
Me too
Hey OP! I actually recently just made a Fall 2017 Berkeley Transfer Waitlist thread too over at: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/1988249-uc-berkeley-transfer-waitlist-fall-2017.html#latest
Sorry about that - I only saw the UCLA one at first but after more digging found this one. Don’t think I can delete it now though.
Some background about me: I actually applied to transfer last year as a math major, and got rejected from Berkeley but got into LA, SD, SB, and Davis. I stayed another year at CC because I decided to switch my major to cognitive science and wanted to complete the prereqs at CC, but partially also because I wanted another shot at Berkeley. Sounds crazy but Berkeley’s been my dream school since forever… I can’t believe I got waitlisted this year.
I wonder what our chances are.
@bbybear what did your stats end up being?
I saw a few people say they’re going to UCLA over Berkeley this year— so your shot isn’t 0 atleast
@FaithGraceUC That’s true, but that happens every year. I assume they calculate for that. Waitlist acceptances are for the chance that they miscalculated and less people commit than they expected would. I’m not giving up hope, but at the same time the chances are on the much lower end.
But a losing attitude isn’t helpful right now. We all have a shot so we need to take advantage of it as much as we can. This essay will have to be the best one I’ve written in my life. Hopefully things work out. Fingers crossed.
I got wait listed but it doesn’t matter I got into my dream school UCLA. Already submitted my SIR.
@jc2017 Good luck to you at UCLA then! I hope you have a great time there.
@Orangered123
Sure, here are my stats:
Major: Cognitive Science
GPA: 3.63
Pre-reqs: All offered at CC completed
IGETC: Completed
EC: Work 25 hours a week, UX intern at a gaming startup, brand ambassador for a tech company, treasurer for a community service org (Circle K)
Applied to: UCD, UCSD, UCB
Accepted to: UCD, UCSD
Waitlisted: UCB
GPA was about the same last year when I got rejected as a math major, but I think my essays were A LOT better this year.
@bbybear Those seem like solid stats. In the gpa range for CogSci at Cal. Sucks that we were all waitlisted. I guess we have fifteen days to write a kickass essay. Where do you plan on SIR’ing in the chance that you aren’t accepted off the waitlist? I’m debating with staying another year or maybe UCSD.
@Orangered123 I know a lot of people who got flat out rejected with 3.9/4.0s, so I’m humbled to be on the waitlist this year. I’m planning on SIR’ing to SD in the meantime!
Yeah, I completely understand that internal debate. I will say though unless you plan on switching majors it might be difficult to justify staying at CC for an extra year. There’s also the question of what classes do you take if you already completed all your prereqs. Even though it was nice to get another shot at Berkeley, the main reason why I stayed an extra year is because I started feeling like math wasn’t right for me, and didn’t feel it was fair to switch majors after I transferred.
Also, if you haven’t seen it already, here’s a website with really informative data on transfer admits.

Not sure how important your major plays a role on getting off the waitlist, but it’s interesting to look at the yield rates. Yield rate is basically the percentage of those who got admitted, and enrolled. So if the yield rate is high for your major, I’d assume this means getting off the waitlist is harder.
And Berkeley as a school overall has the highest yield rate of all the UCs which doesn’t surprise me
@Orangered123 Thank you so much for creating this thread! It will be an invaluable resource and comfort during the next few months.
Decision: Waitlisted
Major: Social Welfare
Overall GPA: 3.63
Major GPA: 3.80
IGETC: Complete
Major Prereqs: Complete by end of Spring 2017
ECs: Work 25+ hrs/week; volunteer at my church (~4 hrs/week for 6 years); elementary school tutor; founded an after-school mentoring/tutoring program
Considering that I was expecting a blunt rejection, I am grateful to have been placed on UCB’s waitlist. It’s difficult to find reliable statistics for last year’s waitlist, so I am definitely anxious about my chances of getting admitted. However, all I can - and plan to - do is write a great opt-in essay and have faith that everything will happen for the best.
I know that those on the waitlist are admitted based on enrollment needs, but is it really dependent on the major to which we applied? Since all applicants to UCB are admitted to the college, but not necessarily the major, how will they know major enrollment numbers?
Yo I was waitlisted by Cal to, I think that PRESIR thing was only for people who are admitted lol Anyway I’ll just opt-in and SIR to UCSD in the meantime 8-| 8-|
@tuannguyenn Same. The essay is turning out to be quite difficult to write. Writing and waiting is going to be a long wait.
