if we are going strictly by academics and prestige i can pretty confidently say:

Cal > UVA
UCLA = or > UVA
UCSD < or = UVA
all other UCs < UVA

but of course you have to see where you fit in better, you have to choose where you feel you will "grow" the most. For me if i got into every school in the country outside the USNews top 10 i would choose UCLA, but its not necessarily the same for you, because academics aren't everything, you have a life to worry about too you know.

If you are instate for UVa, forget the UCs. The two flagships are extremely competitive (bordeline cut throat for premed), and do not offer much of a value proposition at OOS prices. This is a no-brainer.

UCLA grad school > UVA grad school
UCLA undergrad ~= UVA undergrad
UCLA, UCB are way more selective base on GPA, SAT and acceptance rate, however.

For an out-of-state applicant, getting into Berkeley or UCLA is like getting into an Ivy-caliber school: VERY VERY tough. And expensive. The UCs give very little in the way of aid to out-of-state students. Save your money, go to UVA. Great school. (And this is a UC grad speaking.)

Remember, the prestige that matters is the prestige that your employer will perceive. Not the kind of prestige that your parents can boast about at family gatherings.

^I agree. Still, I have reason to believe you may be slightly biased in your opinion :). That said, I would pick UVA or UCB and UCLA for undergrad, and UCB if I wanted a sweet grad school.
