UC Davis! Chance meh, please.

My dream school as of now is actually UC Davis:
I am a junior.

3.41 un weighted Gpa

3.76 UC Weighted Gpa.

Class Rank: Unweighted, Cumulative GPA: Top 15-18 %, High School weighted: Top 12-13%

Not sure which one counts; my counselour is not good at explaing things.

I've taken about 9 Honors classes.

1 Ap( Us history) will take 2-3 next year

2 CP ( College prep..just below Honors)

EC's: - 3 years cross country
- 3 years track and field
-1 year chem club( will do it next year...it was overcrowded this year)
- 1 year Cross Country Club
-2 years in after school homework club type thing( not sure if colleges would care...all we do is do homework and get help from seniors)

QUESTION: Does volunteer hours count as an EC. Is there a seperate part on application for volunteering and work experience?

Volunteer:

-200 hours volunteering at local animal shelter.
- Underprivaleged Christmas Shopping Trip Program (Did it 3 times)

Work Experience:

-Part Time Job: Job cleaning, fileing things at local insurance office (about 2 years)
-Petsmart part time: about a 3 months

Awards:

-Cross Country: Most Improved
-Cross Country: Coach's Award

I want to be a vet and I heard that Davis wants to see people with a few EC's that they are passionate about (Mine: Animals, Running)

I tried to tie my EC's around working with animals but it was harder than I thought. Will I get in with less regorous courses than others, random EC's and a little community service??

actually have taken 5 honors. I counted freshmen year on accident.

OH, and i forgot to mention I got a 1630 on the SAT

In a nut shell, UC Davis is fairly competitive in terms of academics, given that its a UC. That said, the average UC GPA last year was around 3.85 or 3.9. The average SAT I score was around 1850.

Your EC's are not outstanding, there are no leadership shown.

With those scores, your chances would be a low reach to a high match. I would raise that GPA and sat score.

what do you mean by honours classes? like AP classes?

hmm, 200 @ the animal shelter is good, but the christmas shopping program is out.

When colleges mean awards, they mean awards from organizations, companies, presidental scholars, local programs, and such.

I also volunteer at the animal shelter and we have a small clinic for neuter/spay, minor surgeries. lol. anway, if your shelter has one too, you could try and ask if you could actually assist with the surgeries or anything beyond volunteering ( for me, volunteering is cleaning out wards, walking dogs, food, etc.)
Or you could try to get an internship at local vet clinics. For most places, they probably will not have an intern program, as they are businesses. But it would not hurt to ask if they need any assistance and tell them your motivations.

junshik summarizes your chances pretty well.

Your UC GPA is 3.76--you need to try to get it up to about a 3.85 if possible--and your SAT of 1650 needs to be improved to at least a 1750 to have decent chances. (and keep in mind that the UCs count only the best "single sitting" SAT scores).

Right now your statistics will get you accepted at UC Santa Cruz or UC Riverside, but your chances at UC Davis are only about 35% to 40%.

P.S. Another possibility is to go to a local community college or UC Santa Cruz or UC Riverside your first year and then transfer to UC Davis after that (presuming you can get at least a 3.0+ GPA your first year in college).

Good luck.
