I would love to see this! Can you post the link? (when I click on the image, nothing happens)
Hi everyone, my daughter will likely end up at Davis (unless she gets off the UCLA waitlist). I’m excited about this because I know that aside from great academics, Davis is an amazing college town, and I would love for her to have that experience.
However, she’s stuck on the fact that it’s so rural; she has always wanted to go to a school in or near a big city with a thriving arts scene. She’s a photographer, and even though she doesn’t plan to major in art, she wants access to a creative/artistic community and the kind of professional/internship opportunities you can find in places like LA, NYC, or San Fran. (But she didn’t get into those schools.)
Does anyone have a kiddo who felt similarly but ended up really liking Davis and finding the community/opportunities they needed? I’m looking for inspiration stories!
I don’t have a student at Davis, but when we visited my favorite building was the Shrem Museum of Art - it’s really lovely, and there were amazingly enthusiastic students staffing it.

They also have the beautiful Mondavi center - both of these are right on the campus grounds.

Finally, Sacramento is a big, bustling city with (all the urban grit and interesting subjects) and tons of arts options - between that and the natural beauty of Davis I hope she might find plenty to keep her happy, despite its non-urban location.
He has a Face to Face website. This recent interview is interesting.
I go to Picnic Day every year, and even when I myself went to UC Davis in the late 1980s it didn’t seem rural to me then and it doesn’t seem rural to me now–seems more suburban aka “classic college town.” It’s so close to the Bay Area and Sacramento, and the population is so big, that to me it doesn’t “feel” or even look rural like Central Valley small CA towns do. But everything is relative I suppose.
Has she visited/toured UC Davis yet? Plenty of artist/creative types (students, maybe not among non-student residents of Davis) at UC Davis.
Remember that students typically come back to their hometowns for summer breaks and so that’s where the summer jobs/opportunities/internships could be found as well. . .
Thank you! We’re visiting it April 13-15, and it just so happens we’ll be there for Picnic Day!
Thank you!
We’re trying to figure out the best time to visit, and know that Aggie Day is the 8th. Is this day geared towards students who’ve already decided? Or, is this good for students who are still making their decisions? Trying to plan out a trip to a few schools, and wondering about getting there for either Aggie Day or Picnic Day (or even a mid-week visit). Thanks!
Aggie Day is for students who have been admitted and are trying to make a decision. Picnic Day is an event for the community (existing students, alumni, visitors, etc).
Thank you—that’s helpful to us in making plans!
We’re trying to decide too but can’t make Aggie Day due to my work schedule, so we’re going the next week. We’ll be there on the 14th for an admitted student tour and the 15th for Picnic Day. If you can’t make either, I’m sure it will be fine, as there are special tours for admitted students throughout the month. Good luck with the decision! This is such a stressful time, ugh.
Thank you! Good luck to you as well!
(Posting the same question in both UCSD and UCD forums so I can get different perspectives)
UCSD vs. UCD for engineering?
looks like it’s coming down to these two for my son - Nano engineering at UCSD and Materials engineering at UCD.
I have gotten some qualitative info about the difference in campus feel/ culture etc. any quantitative info around campus job placements, salaries, etc would be helpful as well. My guess is that there isn’t a material difference between the two (pun intended )
SD is a gorgeous city and campus, but probably more expensive. Davis we visited a couple weeks ago and it has a nice laid back feel, collaborative culture.
He is a musician (rock/ alternative) and may want to form a band/ play gigs on the side, so this is a consideration.
His OOS option is UIUC which is ranked #2 after MIT for materials science. From a personal standpoint I think he prefers to stay in CA.
I would go to UCD because I believe there is greater flexibility to change majors, and having flexibility when it comes to majors is of immense value when all else is equal.
So excited that S23 was admitted to UC Davis! We are coming for Aggie Day from OOS so that he can decide between UCD and UMD (both aerospace engineering). S23 is an outdoors lover. Since it is such a long trip, we are staying over on Sunday and leaving on Monday. Does anyone have ideas of outdoorsy things to do for the day if we are based out of Davis?
If you like to hike, then Lake Berryessa might be an option. Best Hikes and Trails in Lake Berryessa Recreation Area | AllTrails
Thank you!

My freshman son just switched his major. He was an Environmental Science major in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science – but switched to Environmental Policy in the same college. I believe you can do so after 1 quarter. It was very easy. He had to schedule an appointment with an adviser (which can be a bit difficult to get), come up with an academic plan, and then submit the request. It was approved a few days later.
