UC Davis college of engineering (computer science)

Hello everybody,

I am a prospective student looking into UC Davis as a possible school to go to for a computer science degree. I am thinking about majoring in computer engineering or CS, somewhere around there:).

I was wondering if anybody who has attended UC Davis or knows a lot about the engineering/ CS program could tell me how it is and whether it is a well established program. Also, would you recommend UC Davis for a computer science degree? Because I know their emphasis is on agriculture and health so I haven’t heard a lot about CS.

Thanks for your input!

I’m a CS major, though I’m on the Letters and Science side. The L&S and engineering sides are both in the same department and the actual CS requirements are very similar though.

The program is good, and yes it’s well-established. We get big name companies (Apple, Microsoft, Intel, HP…) recruiting here pretty much every quarter, as well as mid-sized companies and startups of course. Whether I would recommend it or not depends on what exactly you’re looking for. If you’re looking for small classes and no waitlists for said classes, Davis isn’t for you. I’ve never had issues getting in off a waitlist though, if that’s a concern. There’s also a lack of classes in certain specific subdisciplines – game design comes to mind – so that could be a dealbreaker if you want to specialize in those kinds of areas.

Here are some course descriptions directly from the department if you want to see what kinds of classes are offered: http://www.cs.ucdavis.edu/courses/descriptions/

Other than those potential concerns, I would recommend the CS program here.
