Hello all,
I am confused about the TAG requirements for the Computer Science major at UCD. Assist.org includes the physics series as a major prerequisite, however the UC Davis website lists only the Computer Science and Math courses as major prep. Does this mean I can apply and potentially get accepted with TAG for CS if I do not complete the Physics series.
perhaps best to call/email Davis admissions and ask…
What if someone here tells you that you don’t need physics for TAG and they are wrong?
I agree^^^ Always check with the source since requirements will be updated yearly.
I am also TAG’ing to UC Davis for CS as well. Courses on ASSIST basically lists all the prerequisites required/recommended for a major. All I can say is I highly recommend you do the physics courses regardless. This way, even if your TAG is not accepted somehow, you still have a chance of getting in through regular admissions.
Also,
“Transfer students are strongly advised to complete as many preparatory courses
as possible for their major before enrolling at UC Davis. Preparing well for the
major helps students move efficiently toward graduation and significantly
reduces time to degree.”
Quoted directly from the ASSIST page for CS major.
Even if you got in by not doing them, you may end up taking them anyway after you transferred. And since these are lower division courses, it’s only going to take your time away from taking more upper division courses.
TLDR: Take the physics courses. It’s safer for you that way.
Unfortunately I am entering my second year of CC with an already overloaded schedule. I have decided to use my TAG for UCSC CS, which seems to be a much safer bet.
You made that decision without checking with Davis to see if Physics is actually required for TAG? It’s your life, you’re free to make decisions any way you want, but if it was me I wouldn’t pass up the possibility of guaranteed admission at my preferred school without finding out if I actually did qualify.
Note that UCD has a CS major and a CSE major. The CSE major requires four quarters of physics and one quarter of chemistry, while the CS major requires a three quarter sequence of some science (physics is one of the options). Be sure that you are looking at the same major in all contexts (ASSIST and UCD web sites).
If you are still unsure, ask the department directly.
I agree with @ucbalumnus. I looked at UCD TAG requirements and assist.org and you have the option of either the General Chemistry series or the Physics Series unless there is a change for Fall 2020 transfers. Pick up the phone and call.
