Okay so I got accepted into UC Davis for this fall, and although I did get the Pell Grant, it doesn’t cover much. I’m trying to get a loan of as little money as I can, so I’m trying to find scholarships that can help me pay my tuition. My stats are:
-minority: Puertorican/ Hispanic
-income that was written on the FAFSA: $20,000-$30,000
-female
-out of state (Puerto Rico)
Also, if anyone knows of any other helps I can get for living expenses overall, it will be greatly appreciated!
You are OOS for the UCs. They give no state funded need based aid to OOS students. Your Pell is a drop in the bucket for their total cost.
I just can’t imagine you will find full funding for this college…which is what you need.
And your stats would be your SAT or ACT scores…and your GPA. What are those?
I sure hope you have an affordable option on your acceptance list.
The best scholarships come from the university itself.
The UC’s are public state colleges, funded by state funds and taxpayers. Most students who are residents rely on State grants to pay their fees.
Since you are OOS, you don’t qualify for ANY California state funding. If you are not a resident, you are stuck.
FAFSA only covers federal funds. So based on your income, you get a Pell Grant and loans from the federal government. That’s about it. The federal government doesn’t have much money.
The UC’s do not provide any aid to non-residents, regardless of income.
Did you discuss these fees with your guidance counselor before you applied?
Expect that your fees will be $60K per year minus the Pell Grant and loans.
Scholarships are few and far between for the kind of money you need.
Over four years, that’s $240K. If your income is $20K-$30K, you can’t afford Davis.
UCI will have the same issue.
Did you apply to affordable schools?
Being in Puerto Rico, you will be OOS for most states, so you have to find schools that are inexpensive for OOS students.
