I missed the March 2 deadline for California residents and thus I only got a federal

grant.

I also am qualified for two loans, but I'm kinda scared of them and they told me I had to do some kind of interview thing to qualify and I can't find that in the studentloans.gov site. I have little or no experience navigating financial stuff.

I am currently going UC Davis, but because I missed the FAFSA March 2 deadline(I didn't even know about it until a month ago) I didn't get the Blue & Gold plan or anything like that. My financial aid awards page doesn't list any scholarships. I am not fully enrolled yet, I am going to start this Fall.

I am currently looking for scholarships but it's proven to be very confusing and hard to navigate. A lot of ones I run into are only for grad students, study abroad, or research. Some I find are also old or have broken links. Many have passed the deadline. Many I won't get the money until next year and many are the kind where you have to win an essay contest or such and that's not very reliable. Some are from other universities so I don't know if they'll give me anything.

I would think I have a scholarship for me. I am female, bi-racial(hispanic\asian) and have a severe anxiety disorder, a returning student, a transfer student, a slightly older than traditional student, and a psychology major. Yet finding scholarships is still hard and being of mixed race may hinder getting into a hispanic or asian scholarship.

I found a scholarship for people with psychological disorders but it only is for people with severe depression, bipolar, and schizophrenia. I found another that seemed good but they require a driver's license and I don't have one.

So can anyone suggest anything?

Scholarships are very hard to come by. You would be better off to ask if you can defer your acceptance to UC Davis for a year. Then, next year, file the FAFSA well in advance of that Mar. 2 deadline and have all your paperwork organized. Use the year to work, save money, and learn all you can about financial aid. I think this would be your best bet so that you can get all the financial aid you are entitled to.

How old are you? When did you graduate from high school! I’m not all that familiar with the Calgrant program but I thought you had to apply for it within a certain number of years of graduating from high school…but I could be wrong about that.

I’m a transfer student, I’m 24. I was in community college right after I graduated high school and had to drop out for about 3 years due to a medical condition, thankfully I finished most of my credits by then but still had to take a few classes recently to finish the 60 unit thing. Taking another year off isn’t very ideal for me because I feel I have been waiting long enough already.

as a transfer, can you defer until next spring? If you are eligible for B&G, it would be a shame to pass up that free money.

btw: the loan interview is straightforward. They just tell you that you have to pay the money back starting xx months after you cease being a FT student. And they explain different payment options.

Good luck.

Hmm defering until winter seems like a plausible solution. Though I need to call the financial aid people first before doing that.

Also do you have to use a payment plan or can you repay loans quickly before the interest builds up too much?

You can repay the loans early if you are able to do so.

Without the California Grant (about $13k), how are you going to pay the $30k that it costs to go to Davis (for tuition, room, board, books, etc)?

Room and board, my parents can help me with that. Books? not sure.

I just called and they said that no, deferring my admission until winter or spring will not get me another opportunity to get a grant because it’s all based on the FAFSA.

The first time you do anything you are bound to make a lot of mistakes, trouble is, these mistakes cost you.

They said that the scholarships office is still in the process of awarding scholarships but it’ll only finish until the end of August and the tuition fee is due end of September but can be split into 3 payments.

Maybe I’m going to have to take the loan, but I don’t want to be strapped with debt for a long time.
