Being admitted has a lot to do with the number of applications in any given year into your particular major. The more selective the major, the more you will need a higher GPA to be competitive. You would also have to have all your prereq’s finished. Bio Sci is a fairly selective major at UCD, but they claim to look at many factors on your application when making decisions. And as you can see, in previous years, people with lower GPAs did get admitted.
ahhh ok!! thank you!
Someone want to chance me?
GPA: 3.43
Intended Major: Biomedical Engineering
Major Pre-reqs: All but Circuits (Had to drop this semester)
TAG?: Yes (But will be dropped because Circuits is required for my TAG)
IGETC: Yes
EC’s: Part of the State Champion team for XC and track and field (2011, 2012). Life Scout, worked parttime for 3 years.
Applied: UCD, Cal Poly SLO, UCI, UCLA, UCB, UCSB
Accepted: Cal Poly SLO
Denied: No where yet
Pending: All but Cal Poly SLO
I had to drop Circuits this semester because I’m taking classes at three different community colleges (Only way to take the classes I need) and the amount of gas needed is killing my wallet. I do have a nice upward trend of 3.8 from the past 2 years and 100 percentile on the Organic Chemistry ACS. Also, I’m in Sacramento and I’ve heard they’re a little more lenient if you’re local maybe?
Really nervous I won’t get in…
The only thing that might hamper you is that demand for the major in Biomedical Engineering is higher than for any other engineering degree at UCD. However, in previous years people have gotten in with GPAs in the 3.1 - 3.4 range. Perhaps UCD would allow you to complete Circuits this summer. So you shouldn’t lose hope… Besides, you got into SLO, which is pretty hard to get into for any engineering, and is a great alternative if UCD doesn’t come through for you. The fact that you got into SLO also means that you have a good chance of getting into UCD. I’m from Davis, so if anyone wants to know more about my town or the university, please feel free to ask.
@DavisCowsRule
How’s the town and university?
Social life?
What is there to do in Davis?
I’m biased. I love the place & its people. It’s a town with a lot of diversity & most people have higher degrees of education. Downtown gets very crowded, parking is difficult, but so long as you get there a half hour before the lunch or dinner hours, you can park. There’s a whole lot of Asian restaurants, but other great choices, too. The sense of community is really strong, which you can see at the Farmers’ Market & 4th of July celebration. Off campus, most students live in the vast array of apartments, but there are many great houses for rent, too, with greenbelts and parks nearby (the option for those who have dogs). The Unitrans & Yolo bus lines stop everywhere throughout the town, so if you don’t have a car or like to bike, you can still get places easily. Most students shop at Target, but there are many smaller stores with unique things. Also, you really are only 15 minutes from downtown Sacramento for Old Sac, shopping, restaurants, theaters, etc. I like going up to Lake Berryessa & along the rivers for hiking. The university is also part of the community. It is one of the safest and most green (trees, Putah Creek, land all around, horses, cows…). People make a big deal out of the cow odor, but that is not so bad, & is only at the dairy by Tercero dorms - you get used to it. UCD is spread out over a lot of ground, so either park near your classes, or ride a bike (which most students do). The education at UCD is one of the best in the world - easily on a par with Berkeley. Can’t stress that enough. Great professors and student population. You will feel welcome into the community really fast. The campus also has many cultural celebrations, which everyone is able to enjoy. Next week is Native American Culture Days, and it ends with the Pow Wow, with dancing, food, and crafts. There’s Picnic Day on the 18th - Lot of walking, but good for getting an inside look at the different departments (very crowded, though). In May, there’s the Whole Earth Festival, which started in the early 1970s like Earth Day - it has a craft festival element. Socially, there’s not a lot of bars, but there’s places to eat, drink, and go dancing. We have three movie theaters. And you can always drive to SF or Sacto for more entertainment. The campus also has social events, and some people party at their houses. If you are into biking, Davis has miles of flat land. If you ski, the mountains are a couple hours away. If you swim, there are pools throughout the city… What can I say? I love the place. If you want to know something specific, let me know.
Negatives? Should mention Davis gets really hot starting in May and running through October. People with allergies sometimes get hay fever here. Bay Area people complain the most about the environs. Worst is the occasional high winds (every few months) - when you shouldn’t ride your bike.
@DavisCowsRule
Thanks for your response. Circuits isn’t offered at any community colleges near me this summer. Is it really possible to take circuits at Davis this summer? If possible, I’ll gladly do that but doesn’t sound right.
I’m happy to get in Cal Poly SLO, but I might be denied because circuits is desired for Biomedical Engineering (Not required though)! I’d rather go to UC Davis because it’s a better fit for me overall and I believe it’ll help me succeed.
My plan is when I get my acceptance to UC Davis on the 17th (I’m still technically tagging), I’ll accept my admission and let them know immediately about the “W”. One of my professors said that if you are offered admission and accept it, they’re less likely to revoke your admission even if you’re just missing one class. Who knows though, these are just speculations.
Not sure if anyone knows on here but how likely is it to get accepted if I appeal? If Biomedical Engineering doesn’t work on, I’ll try to get in for my alternative major which is Pharmaceutical Chemistry. I know that major is non-impacted and I have all but one pre req done that I can take this summer.
If accepted, talk with UCD, because they will most likely allow you to take the class during a summer session at the campus. http://summer-sessions.ucdavis.edu/ss_transfers/index.html
If one of UCD’s two summer sessions do not have the class you are looking for, you can try Sacramento City College or even Sac State. My brother took several engineering courses at Sac State before coming to UCD as a freshman, and all the courses transferred. (He’s now a PhD grad student at UCD in Computer Engineering.)
Sac State has a Circuits course this coming summer: http://www2.csus.edu/class_schedule/Summer2014/ENGR.html#ENGR 17 - Intro Circuit Analysis (3 Units)
And they take people not in the CSU system if there’s space available. Check first with UCD to make sure it fulfills the requirement before signing up.
Unfortunately, Davis takes almost no one on appeal. But you can always give it a try… Being admitted from the waitlist is also almost impossible, though they say they will admit from the waitlist if the university gets more state funding.
@DavisCowsRule
OMG that is GENIUS. Circuits is offered during both summer sessions, so hopefully I can get in one of them. I would definitely take it over the summer.
It’s not offered at Sac City. How would I take it at Sac State if I’m not a student there? Do you know the process?
Damn, if this actually works I owe you a few beer or something when I’m in Davis. I’ve talked to a few counselors and professors and no one had this idea.
@DavisCowsRule thanks for the info!
Check out UC Davis 2014 Transfer waitlist At least 3 waitlist appeals were accepted I was one of them. I did not have a GPA issue. Psch major from CSU.
You never know how waitlists will go. It all depends on how many SIR the campus, and in what majors. One year can be tight, another much more accommodating.
It really isn’t connected to funding in the overall sense. In some cases, a person needing financial aid may get passed over if there are others without that need. But it’s more of a space game.
And @psyc7955, you mean you were just on the waitlist, right? I believe you cannot appeal a Waitlist rejection.
Davis Campus Fall 2014 stats
Waitlist 1015 offers 538 opt in 23 admits 21 sirs
Appeal 222 admit 45
Cancellation189 (failure to meet condition or submit required documents)
This is from Ms Sun’s Blog
According to Sac State: If you are not a student at another CSU campus, you may take summer courses at Sacramento State on a space available basis through the “Open University” registration procedures. You’d have to contact their registrar’s office or a summer session office for details.
I’ve been reading in the papers that since the state government and UC can’t reach agreement on funding, the size of admissions has been capped at last year’s levels, only with more people applying. The university has stated that more people will be offered waitlist positions, and if funding becomes available, then they will allow admissions accordingly. So, there’s more going on with UC waitlists this year than usual.
@psyc7955 Those are two different things:
(1) people appealed admission rejection
and
(2) People put on a waitlist who were later added in or not added in.
You cannot appeal a waitlist rejection.
Maybe you meant it that way and I misread.
Could have been referring to the blurb you have to write as to why you should get admitted when you accept a position on the waitlist?
