UC Davis Transfer Fall 2018--Discussion Post

Hello everyone,

As a first-time participant of this forum, I wanted to find a discussion forum of prospective transfer students to UC Davis. As most people know, the TAG process runs from Sept. 1 - Sept. 30. Following this is the UC application process in November.

Best of luck to everyone!

First time participant here as well! Looking forward to getting my TAG and UC Apps completed this Fall! I’m pretty set on sending my TAG to Davis. I plan on applying to Cal, UCLA, UCSD, UCSC, and UCSB as well. Hoping this forum finds other prospective transfer students, and best of luck to everyone entering application season this semester

Hey guys,
Nice meeting you guys as well. Like you guys said I’m doing the same with UC Davis TAG thru UCTAP planner. Its easier that way I feel. I’m gonna apply to all UC’s most likely, however for Fall 2018 Transfers I don’t see alot of people posting which seems a bit awkward. Anyways best of luck to you guys and I hope you get in!

Good luck to everyone! I applied for my tag a week ago. Hopefully I get accepted, even though the only EC’s that I have are military service/Vet club treasurer for 2 semesters.

@rkhayd Your EC’s don’t matter if you are TAGing. As long as your TAG is accepted, you’re in.

@coloneljdog Thanks for that piece of information. I am now a lot less worried about it since UC Davis is my number one choice school.

Hey Guys,

Missed being able to TAG because I wont complete my math requirement until the fall. Big bummer considering I’ve visited with several counselors and none informed me of that. Should paid closer attention when reading. Still applying to UCD and UCB for Fall 18. Good luck with your TAG’s everyone.

I’m feeling anxious about my application comparing myself to some other people (which I know many people will say I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it). Could someone give me constructive feedback on my application and where I could improve before I submit it?

Major: MCB & Biochemistry
GPA: 4.0 (Probably a 3.94 when they read my application)

EC’s:
~250 hours of tutoring my peers who are taking the classes that I did.
~150 hours of prepping for Physics & Organic chemistry by doing work from MIT OCW during Summer 2017
~100 hours of piano practice (my hobby :])
(I know I know, nothing outstanding but I’m hoping it’s enough)

Insight Questions: I wasn’t really a great student in high school and spent most of my time playing video games with my friends because it was just so much fun forgetting about the world. Now I realize how much set back I am and I’ve been gunning towards success in my classes since senior year of high school. I’ve also had family problems (yep, the common sad tale) that negatively impacted the environment I had at home. On the bright side, most of my peers who I’ve tutored and are dedicated to do better improved their average grades on exams from a C to a B-A.

I think that’s the gist of what I’m going to talk about (please no copying me, xd)

Background:
Asian
First Generation

Family Income: Lets say I’m in the lower end of the middle class.

Any thoughtful feedback would be helpful and calm this anxious feeling I’m having about not having a seemingly good enough application.

Hi all,

I’ve got my TAG notification yesterday and it’s approved for Fall 18!

Major: Cognitive Science with emphasis in Computer Science
GPA: 3.94 (No Ws, just 1 B)
IGETC: Done by Spring
Prereqs: Done by Spring
International, non-traditional student with CA residency status

I’m still working on the regular application, so I can’t say I’m already a future Aggie yet. But I’m already browsing my future department’s website, reading coursework descriptions, and getting anxious well before transferring, lol!

Also, I’m planning a minor in Comp. Science and I’m a bit concerned about it because I know Comp. Sci has been declared a “selective major”, and I’m afraid I won’t get all the classes I need for my minor. But I’ll worry about it when I get there!

PS: Ahnionring, your academic history looks impeccable, good luck!

eyy, @smsk avg. gpa is 3.20 - 3.63. You’re way above the average so as long as you have your pre-reqs done and IGETC, you’ll get in 100%.

@smsk I’m on the same boat at you. I’m applying for cognitive science because I don’t think I’ll get into comp. sci… Also, what exactly are the prereqs fo the major? I looked it up on assist and I’ve already taken most of the classes but when I looked at the Davis website it really only listed the required courses for the competitive majors

Hello to my fellow cognitive science majors, @lovelei @smsk. I am looking forward to meeting the both of you in Davis.

I hope we all get in. Here are my statistics:

Major: Cognitive Science
GPA: 3.87 (3 Ws)
IGETC: Done
Prereqs: Done by Spring
TAG: Nope
CA student (First-generation, low-income, and Asian)
Male

@Anhionring, you’re a freaking savage. I’m sure you will get into every college that you apply to.

Hello guys,

Sorry I haven’t been on here, it’s been a busy semester–which I’m sure it has been for most of us on here. Heading into this semester, I had a 3.15 GPA and 32 units completed + 5 units from IB tests in high school. Now with finals done and finals unofficially complete, it looks like I’ll be getting a 4.0 with 12 units completed this semester.

Major: Political Science- Public Policy
GPA: 3.15 Pre-Fall 2017, 3.39 Post-Fall 2017
IGETC: Done by Spring
Pre-Reqs: 4.0 GPA (Done)
Units Completed: Counting IB units=49 units
TAG: UC Santa Cruz (Approved)
CA Student (First-generation, low income (under $80,000), African-American/Asian-American Male)

FYI, If anyone is looking to apply to anymore UCs—UCSC, UCM, and UCR are still accepting applications! Furthermore, on Jan. 4th, the Transfer course and application updates begin. Best wishes and have a happy holiday season to all!

Looking great, @nsacucdn. I wish you the best of luck and thank you for the information on application updates.

Thank you I was wondering when they opened.

if all goes well then will be 3.68 by the end of spring. I know that they dont take spring grades into account while admitting. A little background though, I was originally a Nursing major but later switched because I wanted to broaden my area of study which is why I took human anatomy and physio. I am thinking about dropping Microbiology in the spring before I start my classes because I dont need to take it and I would rather focus on my chem courses which are required for Davis

You need to have a 3.0+ major or a VERY compelling story/achievement(s) to have any chance of admission at UC Davis. If you don’t, admission officers won’t even bat an eye at your application before they send it to the rejection pile. You have to show that you can handle tough courses once you transfer and, trust me, Biological sciences and NPB are not a joke (unless you’re a genius groomed for success your entire life). A W in calculus, a B in intro chem, and a C in gen chem suggests that the courses at Davis will send you running for your money and time. You may have work or other things going on in your life that admission officers may or may not know about (which you should totally have shown in your app) so that’s a plus. Other than that, your Spring 2018 semester is a pain. Gen chem 2, microbiology, and organic chemistry (even intro level), together, will give you a huge pain in the back. And who knows, you could even have a grumpy stats professor? Also, if i’m not mistaken, you need to take the general biology class, A.K.A., Intro molecular and cellular biology to even be considered for ANY biology-related major (NPB, Biological sciences) at Davis. Where’s your general biology class?? You also need physics in there, sadly :/. My guess at your chance: 0%, sorry. I would recommend taking another year to finish your classes.

These are the classes you need for Biological Sciences:
-Intro Molecular Biology (Could be called something else at your college)
-Plant Science
-Animal Science

-Gen Chem 1
-Gen Chem 2

-Organic Chemistry 1
-Organic Chemistry 2

-General Physics 1
-General Physics 2

-Calculus 1
-Calculus 2

-GENERAL ED’S (GO SEE COUNSELOR AND ASK THEM ABOUT GENERAL EDS. DO NOT ASK THEM ANYTHING ELSE UNLESS YOU TRUST THEM COMPLETELY. ALWAYS DOUBT WHAT THEY SAY AND ASK OTHER RELIABLE PEOPLE—YOUR PROFESSORS)

The classes required to transfer as an NPB major are the same as biological sciences’.

If you don’t believe me, go to assist.org, look up your college, select To: University of California, Davis, and select your major. Assist.org is used widely among successful transfer applicants so I HIGHLY recommend you to use it to get information on what you need to take. Also, if you want a good idea about the average GPA for your major, here you go:

(average 25th to 75th percentile for the past few years)

Biological Sciences: 3.30-3.73
NPB: 3.30-3.76

Additional info: I hear UC Davis does accept applicants who don’t have ALL of their major pre-requisites done (as in missing only ONE or TWO pre-reqs, that’s it) or ALL their GE’s done (as in missing only ONE-THREE GE classes). I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO FINISH ALL THOSE BULL (most of the time, they really are filled with unnecessary information you don’t even need to know…) GE CLASSES AT YOUR COMMUNITY COLLEGE SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO SPEND $$$, TIME, BLOOD AND SWEAT AT THE UC TO FINISH THEM FOR YOUR MAJOR. As for your pre-reqs, if you don’t finish them at the community college and instead take them at the UC, IT WILL BE VERY HARD TO DO WELL AND YOU WILL HAVE TO WORK SUPER HARD AS YOU ARE COMPETING AGAINST MOTIVATED (most of the time) HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES WHO WILL MAKE IT HARD FOR YOU TO GET A GOOD GRADE AS CLASSES ARE CURVED AT UC DAVIS.

Whatever happens, just do your best and learn as much as you can to better yourself. Don’t overwhelm yourself, but don’t take it too easy either. Find balance, etc. GL!

@Anhionring Great advice you gave that I think applies to anyone with a pulse trying to transfer. I also recommend @GxBearrr to consider taking 2 or 3 summer classes to get the feel of how pressure packed and ‘on-top-of-it’ UCD may be, considering how different various CCCs are in pace and work. Nothing wrong with finding your way while you still can, it’s better to adjust these things now than in UCD when $$$ is thrown down the drain.

Best of luck!

@waiting4answer Best of luck to you too, it’s an exciting time that we’re approaching.
