Hello,
I am new to CC (first post). I have a question regarding UC Davis and IGETC certification. I am applying to UC Davis for the fall 17 semester in Managerial Economics (B.S degree). I will be using the TAG program & I will be IGETC certified by then. UC Davis’s website states that IGETC is recommend for B.A degrees while the UC Davis GE courses is recommended for B.S degrees. If I am IGETC certified will I be exempt from taking the GE courses even though I am studying for a B.S degree. Anyone with experience or knowledge on this please help clarify!
You could still take “GE” courses as electives to balance your schedule out. It’s just that completing IGETC means that you don’t have to take those classes. They would only count towards total credits for graduation in that case, or possibly a minor depending on what exact classes you’re taking.
Now I’m not sure how it is with managerial econ, but I do know that in a lot of unit-heavy majors the reason they recommend not completing IGETC is simply because the major will require heavy loads of upper division major classes for a transfer student. Still having to take GEs allows you to better balance your schedules while still guaranteeing they count towards something specific. And in the case of some majors with heavy prep work (engineering comes to mind), you might have to forgo prep classes at CC in order to complete IGETC, which would mean you have to do those classes at UCD. Majors leading to a BS are more likely to have a lot of prep classes like that than majors leading to a BA, though obviously it depends very much on the specific major.
Again, this is talking in generalities because I don’t know about man econ requirements specifically.
Thanks for the insight PhantomVirgo, I really appreciate it. Yeah, I don’t want to take any GE classes at UCD. What I was hoping for is that being IGETC certified will make me exempt from taking GE classes at UCD. Thanks for clearing that up. I have completed quite a few major requirements here at the community college so believe I will be fine regarding the amount of units I have going in.
I have been looking at the Managerial Economics class requirements in the UCD catalog. After the elgible units for my major that I have taken at my community college are transferred to UCD it looks like I will have about 68 units to complete. I am considering minoring in Economics which is an extra 20 units. I am hoping to graduate in two years.
Can anyone comment on how manageable 88 units in two years is? I have never taken classes in the quarter system, but in the semester system here at my community college I have taken 14-16 units with no problem.
If you’re taking a standard load of 15 units per quarter, you’d be doing at least 90 units anyway. 88 is perfectly doable and even allows you a tiny bit of leeway if you need to take 13 units for one quarter, for example.
Edit: I went and tallied up my units in my last two years out of curiosity. Turns out I did 88 units myself in that time, and still had room for a couple classes of general interest while completing a double major. This was spread out over four 16 unit quarter and two 12 unit quarters at the end. Mind you, I also did 95 units in my first two years here, 103 if you count summer session between sophomore and junior year, to knock out all my prereqs. It sounds like you already have your prereqs done though, so that should be a nonissue.
My question in this case would be whether you’d be allowed to minor in econ when you’re already majoring in man econ. I know that UCD is strict on only one class overlapping between a major and a minor, so it really depends on how similar the programs actually are.
