UC Davis or Cal Poly Pomona Engineering

I have been accepted into both CPP and UCD, but I do not know which college I should choose to attend for engineering. Please help! Thank you

Definitely visit both. I don’t know about the Engineering programs but CPP has more of a commuter feel to it and Davis is more of a community.

Both are fantastic engineering programs. However, I’d always heard that Cal Poly Pomona tends to focus more on the practical applications and less on the theory behind an area of study whereas Davis is kind of a balance of theory and application. Depending on what engineering you’re specifically doing, one could be a better way to go than the other.

@hisllama which school would you recommend if I wanted to explore all the engineering fields as a freshman?

I know UC Davis has an “intro to engineering” type class called ENG 001:Nuts and Bolts that basically has a 1-2 lecture introduction to each of the engineering fields. I knew people who took it and thought it was helpful just to get a feel for what exactly a civil engineering degree is vs. what a mechanical engineering degree. With the exception of mechanical/aerospace and biomedical which are impacted, it is pretty easy to move between engineering majors if you are already an engineering major.
I wouldn’t worry about it too much at this moment since all engineers take pretty similar classes for the first couple quarters. You’re going to start with calculus and then some intro classes in your major and probably a humanities class for the general education requirement. Even if you switch, its usually not a big deal to catch up on the major-specific classes as long as you decide within the first year or so. The longer you wait, the more catch-up you have to do and the longer it takes to graduate.
I can’t speak to Cal Poly’s policies but I’d always heard their process for changing majors is not very friendly.
