UC Davis or Irvine?

I am stuck between the two schools... I am from San Diego, so I will be visiting Irvine soon as well as Davis. I am interested in entering Medical or PA school, therefore, I am entering pre-med and will possibly be majoring in Biology.

What are the pros and cons to each school?
I am more interested in the social scene because I went to a small high school where there was no sort of football team or social environment like a typical high school.

Answer these questions for us first:

<a href=“Before you ask which colleges to apply to, please consider - College Search & Selection - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1621234-before-you-ask-which-colleges-to-apply-to-please-consider.html</a></p>

Davis is more rural, college town feeling. Bikes are biggest way to get around. Very strong biology and agriculture/ vet programs. It got its start as Cal’s farm school. Students live on campus giving more residential feel. Only UC besides Cal and UCLA with football team.

UCI is strong academically too. But, It has more of a commuter student population and less school spirit, IMO.

jkeil911, that link doesn’t seem appropriate when you have acceptances in. That was intended a questionnaire for students applying. Now that the student knows where they are in, they can directly compare the campus and student life. costs from one UC to the other are about the same, unless there is a Regent’s scholarship involved.

TheLefty, since you will visit, I think you can make your own decision. I think the college town atmosphere of Davis is nicer. And you will get a trip or so into San Francisco which will be nice. I think it is nice to get a feel for the other end of the state. But both nice choices.

True, BP, that some of the questions are passé, but WE don’t have the information that OP has and we cannot help OP without some of that info. I am assuming that the OP can figure that out.

UCD has an excellent PA program and if your are attending as an Undergrad you have an advantage (thats what I was told by a former grad). My older S is attending UCD and really likes the small town feel but you have Sacramento 20 min away and SF close by. UCI and UCD have a different vibe. I found UCI too commuter and didn’t have much school spirit versus UCD which has a the “AGGIE PACK” group of students at the Football games which really go all out for their team. The city of Davis really embraces the university and the students.
Good Luck on your decision.

Thank you very much for the advice!
I was wondering about the medical centers at both universities and how do they compare?

bump please…

Waht possible differences could there be that would be relevant to an undergraduate?

The UCI Medical Center is not actually near UCI, it’s closer to Santa Ana, a much poorer city next to Irvine. If you intend to shadow there, know that it’s not within walking/biking distance of the school.

Davis is great for biological sciences, and I personally prefer their college town, although PROXIMITY to a city goes to Irvine, to me. Were it me I’d choose Davis, but that is a personality thing. What do you want out of college?

What I would like to have out of college is experience in the medical field, preparation for medical school, and overall a memorable experience.

Both schools will allow you to get into medical school and have memorable experiences. Go visit the two institutions and see which one you prefer. I’ve spent around two weeks staying with friends at UC Davis and used to work for UCI professors. Though they are likely similar academically, they are very different socially and it’s likely that you’ll find one more amenable than the other.

Can you describe the social experience at both colleges? Thank you so far for the information, I appreciate it!
