UC Davis or Santa Cruz for a future Fed?

I'm 20 years old. I'm a transfer student from Ventura College in Southern California. I messed up my first year of community college and got off academic probation and began getting good grades. I transfer this year to either Santa Cruz or Davis.

I wanted to go to UCSB, but I got rejected for having a 2.88 GPA, so i'm currently appealing that on the basis that I work 24 hours a week as an armed security officer and could not focus all my energy on school.
But, in the likely event my appeal is denied, I will need to choose between UC Davis and Santa Cruz, which is why I write here today.

I major in Sociology with an emphasis on law. I am joining the Army as an 11X (Infantry) after I graduate college and have the ultimate career goal of becoming a federal law enforcement officer. (Either FBI, ATF, Border Patrol or US Marshals)
So, you may ask, why a future Fed would even consider going to a pot-smokin' hippie school? I want to go to Santa Cruz based on the beautiful campus, by the beach, excellent academics, and the Pass/No Pass system, which I think is good because it will be a transition for me in terms of switching to quarters from semesters.

Davis has much to offer as well, being considered a public Ivy in terms of academics, and being close to the state capital. (Internships.) I am interested in being involved with a fraternity as well and i've heard Davis has a good frat scene, while Santa Cruz does not.

I'm not quite a huge party guy, but I do enjoy having a couple Rolling Rocks on the weekends. I do not smoke pot, which I heard is the norm in Santa Cruz.

So, for a future G-man and fraternity man, which college is better for me?

Last but not least, are there security companies hiring in either city?

Just based on reading what you wrote, I think you should head to UC Davis. It’s prestigious, close to the capital, social scene is AMAZING (aggie pack!)

if you goto UCSC, with your background you might find yourself going through a crisis of sorts, especially if you are doing sociology.

Tuna-
What do you mean, crisis of sorts? Like the hippie professors trying to say i’m a bad person cause I wanna be a Fed?

Well Sociology in general is critical against institutions such as law enforcement (or just any institutions in general). I meant more like, if you went to UCSC as a sociology major, you might find yourself no longer wanting to go into law enforcement in the future.

So what’s to say that I won’t go through this same conflict at Davis? I just need to know which school is the better one in terms of academia and socializing.

If it’s academia and socializing you’re after- UC Davis is the place for you!

[The Aggie Pack](http://ica.ucdavis.edu/aggiepack/index.php)

As well as if there are security companies I can work for there.

I’d imagine there would be, but I’m really not sure. Best of luck!

For sure, broski. Looks like it’s Davis for me at this point. Not looking forward to the Central Valley heat, but hey, maybe UCSB will let me in on appeal and it’ll be a non-issue.

go to Davis!! It’s a great school and the central valley heat isn’t so bad… but I’ve lived in the valley my whole life so I’m use to it haha

hahaha SFV or Central Valley? I’ve done some time in the SFV and i’ll tell ya what, I don’t miss it. I’ve passed thru Modesto and I couldn’t WAIT to get out…

I live in modesto hahaha

and I can’t WAIT to get out

Haha gnarly, so your going to Davis as well? Do you have facebook? You sound chill as hell.

Shellbelltaylor, I’m from the CV too, born in Modesto, now I live in Tracy. I’ve never been bothered by the weather here as well but I guess if you’re coming from So-Cal it would be kind of a slap in the face.

Is it abominable, though? Like going to Yosemite? 80 degrees I can stand, anything above 85 is a no no.

It definitely gets above 85 degrees in the Summer, but in the fall as well as spring the weather here is a lot more mild, so I guess as long as you aren’t taking summer school in Davis you should be fine. In the winter it rains a lot and is pretty cold, in the summer it is really hot, two extremes you could say.

I think Davis is likely the better choice, but it is nowhere near being considered a “public Ivy”. The average SAT scores alone rule that out.
