heya,
So I have my college search narrowed down to 2 colleges: Illinois and Davis... and I cannot decide at all... they seem to match eachother in so many areas. Does anybody have any major differences between the 2 colleges? I have davis winning for weather/location and illinois winning for social life and sports.

davis sports is going up up up in case you wanted to know. they moved up to division 1 in many sports have been beating stanford in football, soccer, wresting, and other sports. but it depends on your major and what kind of environment you want to surrounded by.

my major at davis is optical engineering but i want to switch to economics after the first year and at illinois I am in the professional pilot program where i choose my major junior year, which will probably be finance. I want to be in ROTC, and I know illinois has a good program there but I have heard davis has the best in CA.

the ladies at illinois were way hotter too :-P

bump

well since youre a cali resident i would go to UCD, but if money isnt a problem go to UIUC

money isnt really a problem, and the price difference is like 11 grand cause the housing at illinois costs less.

how bad would it be to send in SIRs to both places? how much does each deposit cost? Will anything happen beyond losing the deposit? i used the search function but couldnt get an exact answer, mostly speculation.

if in state, go to davis. if money is no matter, then i would personally choose u of illinois.

what major factors make you guys say UIUC over Davis (disregarding finances)?

Illinois.
1-Since you're from the bay area, it will do you good to leave home.
2-UI has a better national rep.
3-Big10 sports are fun, classic American college experience. davis is more like an expansion franchise, if you get my drift.

I'm actually in a situation nearly the same as you, (between UofI and ucd) except I live in illinois.

In the end, I chose uc davis because I felt that davis had a better rep in the major I was going into, biochem. Also, if you don't like snow, then I think you'll dread the winters at UofI. Honestly, that was one of my reasons to get out of illinois. I'm not sure about how the finance programs are at UofI, but what they're mainly known for is their top knotch engineering programs.

Overall, if you're looking for a new experiences like how I am, I guess UofI would be good for you.

I think ill send in the UIUC SIR tomorrow. How bad of an idea would it be to send in the UCD one too just in case i change my mind?

whats your major?

bobbo, read post 3

neo, thanks

Yeah, think about spending four years or more at each, and which you would enjoy more. Think about ease of getting home, and whether or not Davis is too close to home, or UIUC too far. Think about the atmosphere and weather- perhaps you want a slight change (I don't know what UIUC is like, probably similar to Chicago, right? Cold winters? That's about four months of the school year. Maybe you want seasons, maybe not?). Think about the people who will be there- will you experience culture shock at UIUC? Some people experience it from different regions to different regions. Or maybe you want this different cultural experience. Really think about these things.

Did this help?

thanks DRab, those are definitely some things i will consider. It hasnt snowed here (sf peninsula) in forever, so i dont really know what its like to live in the snow. we'll see, i guess :)

well, I sent in the SIR to illinois today. i guess the question now is: will i have the guts to not send in davis's

I think some pretty negative things might result. I'd advise that you don't do it, or cancel the UIUC first.

Go to Illinois. Enjoy the traditional college experience. Big 10 schools have a certain exciting and confident vibe, and Illinois is certainly no exception. A lot of people (including me) love the change of seasons. If it were Cal or UCLA, I could see your indecision. UCD? Naw.

I'm from California and had to choose between UCs (mainly Irvine) and UIUC. I went for UIUC, it wasn't too hard of a decision for me. I've never been to the Davis campus, but I've heard a lot of people talk about it and it kind of seems like a love it or hate it type of thing. I've been to the Illinois campus and I really liked it. I would also say that Illinois has a better reputation, at least outside of California.
