UC Davis Parents Thread

@sopranokitty Thanks for the link. Been searching for it. If one is in the Bio Sci. department and took the MAT 17ABC and then switched to Letters and Sci Dept, would they be acceptable to L & S?

@ cahsparent: Yes. In fact, it’s easy to switch majors. All a student has to do is submit a change of major petition, which should take about 20-30 minutes at best (since if you’re switching from one college to another, you need to get the signature of the dean of the college you’re currently in, then find the dean of the college you want to switch to, then turn the completed form either to Mrak Hall or your current dean’s office), and then it takes at least 3 days to process the form.

What comes with the room and what should one bring with them? D is slated to be in Miller Hall and anyone with experience with Miller Hall that can help me with this?

Cahsparent, have the dorms been already assigned?
I have this irrational feeling that DD is going to miss her deadlines , what with the non-stop partying since graduation last week and the Disney trip etc etc etc. I would love to do it all myself and be done with it, but that’s not the point now, is it :)

@ cahsparent: Each room is furnished with a bed, 80" extra long twin mattress, desk, desk chair, lamp, bookshelf, and wastebasket for each occupant. Each room is also furnished with one recycling container. All linens must be provided by residents. Each student will be provided with 4 brown vinyl dipped “S” hooks for hanging hat, towels, backpacks, etc., from each bed end.

I live in Cuarto, but the bedroom amenities should be the same no matter what residential area you live in.

@ Ucdmom: dorms usually don’t get assigned until the week of August 31st according to the Student Housing calendar.

@Ucdmom We got an email from UCD confirming the number of people in a room (Double/Triple). The email also says that in late June, “the housing office will re-open their selection criteria website so that you can indicate our specific theme program.”

As for what you are going through, there is nothing abnormal about it. My sense is that they have just graduated from high school and I can see why they are not paying attention to the college preparation. They think they are adults, but the word “planning” seems to be missing from their vocabulary. SAT does a very bad job at that :)

Call me a helicopter parent, and I am guilty as charged. Please fell free to watch this thread, I started this so that, as parents, we have each other to lean on! Also, we can always count on “inside info” through sopranokitty

@sopranokitty Thank you for staying on top of this thread. What items are the students allowed to bring, a mini Fridge, sound system? I guess the question is more what are they not allowed to bring. Yup, my D is going to miss her puppy, but that is one of the costs of going to college.

Assuming they haven’t changed anything in the last three years, you can’t bring anything that uses fire or has exposed heating (no toasters or torchieres), animals, and anything deemed illegal (e.g. hard drugs). But anything and everything else is fair game, even bikes. That’s how I was able to keep my shiny (not so much after three years) and expensive bike safe.

Here’s a list of things that students can bring and what they can’t bring:

[url=<a href=“http://housing.ucdavis.edu/prospective/moving_in_reshalls_whattobring.asp]UC”>What To Bring (And What Not To Bring) For Living In The Residence Halls | UC Davis Student Housing and Dining Services]UC Davis Student Housing: What to Bring/url.

Is the chemistry placement exam on June 25 th for the summer school only or can freshmen also take it?

the chemistry placement exam is for incoming students and students who need to take CHE 2A, not for summer school.

I thought you took chemistry placement exams at orientation not a specific date? What if you can’t make that date?

Yes, if you look at the student orientation schedule ([Orientation: Sample First-Year Student Schedule](http://orientation.ucdavis.edu/first-year/schedule-student.html)), there’s a spot early on Day 2 for a placement exam (chemistry or foreign language). Not sure how they handle it if you need to do both.

To borrow from another thread, do the rooms have to be cleaned before move-in? Parents are talking anywhere from steam cleaning walls to spraying lysol on all surfaces- don’t know if my DD will even let me step into the dorm room after the last piece of stuff is dropped off?
Re: chem placement exam - it will be given during orientation and if not taken at that time, it can be taken in fall before the classes start.

@ ucdmom: Except for Thoreau Hall (which is used as a dorm during summer session), the rest of the dorm buildings are currently empty and have already been cleaned out by current freshmen and transfer students, so they don’t have to be cleaned before move-in…in fact, your DD won’t know where she’s going to dorm yet until late August, since that’s when Student Housing releases info on where students will be staying. Steam cleaning walls is not necessary, and besides, there’s the maintenance staff in every dorm building.

The usual mundane things between now and Orientation… Need to open a Bank account for D. Any particular bank that is more prevalent on Campus than others?

Looks like US Bank allows you to combine your AggieCard with a U.S. Bank Student Checking account. Plus it appears the University gains from this, which is a good thing.

[UC Davis gives US Bank marketing access, perks in exchange for royalties | California Watch](<a href=“[600+] California Wallpapers | Wallpapers.com”>[600+] California Wallpapers | Wallpapers.com)

After some more digging it looks like US Bank pulled out as recently as March 16, 2012

Re: books
Parents at another thread are talking about books, buying them vs. Renting etc.
My question is: My D hasn’t even got her classes assigned so how can we start looking for the books… Can I be sure she will get all the classes - chem, math, English - she wants.

Also I looked up the list of classes and most of the classes which fulfill GE requirements are not being offered for fall qtr. E.g history , religion etc . Any thoughts?

Re: banking
That’s a bummer about US Bank. We had planned to use them, but hadn’t heard about them pulling out of the agreement. They also appeared to be the only bank with an actual branch on campus.

There is a list of who all has ATMs on campus at [UCDavis Cashier’s Office](http://cashier.ucdavis.edu/services/atm.cfm)

Not sure how up-to-date it is, since it still lists the US Bank branch. It looks like most of the banks/credit unions with ATMs on campus also have branches in town for when students need more than the machine.

@ LostCoast and cahsparent: US Bank pulled out sometime during spring quarter this year because of a small group of Occupy protesters who barricaded the only entrance/exit.

Also, US Bank still has its ATM on campus. It’s just their branch on the UCD campus that’s gone.

Does it seem like there will be any hassle for the students in the loss of the UCD/US Bank agreement?

There’s still the US Bank branch in downtown Davis, but it does inconvenience some of the students and faculty members who used to use the on-campus location, from what I’ve read in the campus newspaper a few months back.
