cahsparent is right on the money with this one.

My Dd did mention the ramble apartments, and I did look them up, there seems to be a lot of negative reviews about them, inexperiencEd and disinterested management etc, so let’s see, we might look around the weekend after the finals.
I would be interested to hear more opinions on this one …

Wishing all the Aggie Parents and their Students the very Best in this New Year!!!

Ucdmom- did you have a chance to scope out the apartment options?

Hullo all
Yes mom60 ,and my DD decided on the ramble apts which we did a quick tour of, cahsparent was right, the apts are lovely, and close to the campus. So far look good. New and clean. She has a couple of friends as room mates so hopefully this will work out. Mom60, ask me any specific questions and I will try to answer. The person who took us around was a senior and seemed pretty happy with the apts

@Ucdmom Glad to know your D decided on The Ramble. Let’s hope some of the Management kinks have been worked out. A friend’s kid has lived there this past year and loves it. My D and this kid have known each other for a number of years and that was her reference. Let’s hope it all works out well.

D is still looking for two roommates for her four bedroom apartment.

D mentioned the Rambles last summer when she was trying to convince us to let her skip living in a dorm. I also have read all the bad reviews. Did they mention if it is easy to get a parking space? She got lucky in the roommate department and her and her dorm rm have become best friends. They have the same major and similar outside interests. They are hoping to get a 2 bdrm apartment together for next fall. I don’t think her RM can afford the Rambles.
Both the girls are not super social and are looking for a quiet enviroment. They want to be within biking distance to the school though my D will have a car. I have suggested that she talk with the seniors she knows about places to live. I don’t know how early they need to secure housing.

@mom60 The sooner your D secures a place the better. As time goes by affordable apartments within walking distance and then biking distance get taken.

I have reminded her that they need to get serious about looking. My D said many of the places that are walk able to campus or a short bike ride are small and expensive or have poor parking. My D will need parking for a large truck.

@ mom60: A lot of the apartments don’t start renting out to students for the upcoming year this early in the quarter, though. Some start in late February, sometime after Housing Day, which is an event where students can meet with representatives from several apartments in Davis and decide where they want to live, while others start renting out units to students later in spring or even summer. A lot of the apartments start posting availabilities on craigslist, so definitely look at that. I’ve been through the apartment hunting process before. :)

To the Parents who are anxiously waiting with their students for that Acceptance Letter:

There are a few of us, parents, that have gone through this, last year, and are happy to answer any questions you may have about UC Davis.

Is the policy of notification of merit-based aid AFTER requiring a commitment to attend something unique to Davis, or is this common on the West Coast?

@phragman That is a new one. In general all forms of Financial Aid (both need based and Merit) are part of the per acceptance (SIR) package. From time to time there may be some other merit based awards that are made by the school but that is used to offset the tuition for the following quarter.

@cahsparent
I knew better than to believe the response I got from the Financial Aid office yesterday (quoted below). I am contemplating my reply directed to someone who may have status (four different people with four different titles have been replying to me, none with any impressive-sounding title). Any particular contacts you have found helpful in that office?

“Our University offers a few scholarships at the time of admission. We offer the rest of our scholarships during the summer. However at that time all of our students are being considered for scholarships. As a result, it is highly competitive. So any financial decisions on whether to attend or not, should be made based on the information you have before May 1st. If a scholarship is awarded during the summer, that is a bonus. Nonetheless, decisions should not be made in anticipation of receiving a scholarship. I hope that clears things up a little”

Does anyone have any experience with transfer housing–the student housing apartments or privatized apartments? Does Davis do a good job matching roommates for apartments? My son has been accepted as a transfer and does not know anyone attending Davis or who will transfer to Davis.

I’m in a facebook group for college confidential Davis transfers and at least one male has mentioned that he is looking for a roommate and an apartment. Ask him to join.

There’s also an official transfer UC Davis class of 2015 group.

@phragman Sorry I don’t have anyone specific. As I suspected, you need to mke the decision before May 1 based on on information you currently have.

cmccl91, thanks for the information.

I’m so very happy to find this thread! My son will be a UCD sophomore this fall and am looking for any input/advice about the transistion from dorm to apartment. He’ll be at Sharps and Flats with 3 other guys. Also, jobs? I hear that they are everywhere but we’re not finding any that work with a college schedule. He works 40 hour/week in the summers (lifeguard). Struggling to find a 10+ hour/week schoolyear job that works around classes. Suggestions?

Have your son check Aggie Job Link and vacancy.ucdavis.edu. Both mainly have on-campus jobs that are flexible with students’ schedules.
