UC Davis - premed courses math

I’m an incoming freshman and was wondering what math course I’m supposed to take if I want to meet pre-med requirements.

Can I take 16A? 17A? 21A? What series am I supposed to go through? Or does it not matter as long as I go through a series?

I would take the 17A-B series since this is the series recommended for most science majors. The 21 series is for Engineering and if you are pursuing a Medical school career, you want to maintain a good GPA. The 16 Series is acceptable but I would check with Pre-Med advising just to confirm.

What is your major at UCD?

@Gumbymom I’m a food science major, but I was still intending on going through the pre-med route. For food science, it says I only have to take the 16 series. I wasn’t sure if I should change that since I want to be pre-med as well. I think the 17 series seems like a good idea, I’ll try to sign up for that if I’m allowed to.

Good luck. You should still consult your major advisor during orientation. My son knew several non-bio (Pre-Med) majors that opted to take the 17 series instead of the 16. They also said there were better professors teaching the 17 series.

Taking the 17 series would be a safe bet if you might go into pre-med. It’s better to err too high on the series; for example, if you DO go into pre-med, I think they wouldn’t take the 16 series. But if you take 17 and decide to stick to food science, they won’t make you take another series of math! Also, I’ve taken the 17 series and wouldn’t say it’s particularly difficult.

@Morwinyon Thank you! That was really helpful advice, I’ll stick with 17. May I ask, what teacher did you have? I’m wondering what professor would be the best to try and take for the 17 series. I heard the professors for 16 were better so I’m a little worried haha.
