The uc Davis tag minimum is now a 3.2 for all 2012 applicants. I have a 3.0 gpa right now but I'll work hard this semester and over the summer to get it up to a 3.2. My question is that it says I need to be a full time student from spring 2012-spring 2012. I'm a part time student right now ( 6 units) but I'll be full time the rest of my semesters here at my CC. Will this affect my tag?

I don’t know if anyone on here can tell you for certain because things have changed since last year, but last year you could waive the full time student requirement if you had a good reason for being a part time student, like needing to work.

I’m hoping UCSB maintains their cap at 3.2…I’m guessing Irvine will probably raise it to a 3.2? With the exception of SD, I think the other campuses should just keep it at a 3.2.

What if you’re done with all your classes in 2012 spring? Will not attending during spring ruin TAG??

To be honest, when I first came to community college and was introduced to TAGs, I was surprised how “low” one’s GPA could be to still get guaranteed admission to schools like UCSD, UCD, UCSB and UCI. It’s not that a 3.0 is that low of a GPA… But it is VERY hard to get into these schools as a freshman (I didn’t make it into most of them, let alone UCB or UCLA). Freshmen need SATs, great extra-curriculars, super essays, etc. to get in. Getting a 3.0+ in CC seemed like a piece of cake compared to what is required of freshmen.

My point was, that UCs requiring 3.2-3.5 GPAs for TAG is not shockingly high for their standards.

Sucks for HS seniors I guess, but we were all seniors at some point in our lives, so I don’t buy into the whole SAT this and that, they use to demean us transfers, as if we are less worthy of entrance. imo

@dean, I guess the fact that they made the TAG requirements a lot more difficult than previous years is what makes us 2012 transfers a bit bitter.

Yeah, transfers are looked down upon by some freshman admits because they believe we transfers weren’t good enough to be admitted in the first place and have no reason to be in THEIR prestigious college.
I believe lots of transfers are better equipped for arrival on a UC campus than lots of freshmen. Most of us have real world experience, know how college “works,” know what we want to do and so on.

Movinunit, that’s exactly what I was thinking.

I feel so out of it. LOL. 3.0 to 3.2? Is that a reasonable goal? I have a 3.0 right now. I’ll get a 4.0 or 3.5 this semester. And then I have one class this summer. Maybe two but with one P/NP.
What are your views on this?

You can do it! Take 2 classes you know you can ace during the summer (if you have to, take a random elective NOT anything hard) and you’re good to qualify for TAG in September. Remember, though, You’ll have to maintain the 3.2 GPA through the end of Spring 2012 as well.

How many units do you have right now, vikram and what exactly (decimals count) is your GPA?

You can easily get your GPA up, as long as you take a solid unit load (15 or so) and get As.

I highly encourage doing that, because they’ll be really cracking down on TAGs. This year some 3.6/3.7/3.8 non-TAG people who met TAG requirements but didn’t apply for it got rejected due to all the spots being taken by less-qualified people with TAG (especially in impacted majors). I think they’ll continue to raise standards if the barely-qualifying TAG applicants push out highly-qualified students.

good thing that i applied to an imapcted major at UCSD, so i compete with TAG people for the spots. if i had applied to a non-impacted major, i would be worrying by now.

I have a 3.00 GPA right now. I have about 19 units completed as of now WITH AP credit (AP world history-4).
Im taking 6 units this semester because I tried laying back. I’m only 17 years old so college is a bit new to me. I’m used to it now. So by the end of this spring semester I’ll have 26 units completed. I’m only taking 2 classes right now, Frosh english and US history. I expect an A in both these classes ( 3 units each). At worst, one A and one B. I’m registered in Statistics and film this summer. I’m thinking I should do P/NP for film. What do you guys think?

thank you so much for your help. It means a lot! :D

@vikram: Because you don’t have many units completed, it is easy for you to raise your GPA! Doing P/NP makes the grade not count towards GPA, so I wouldn’t do it. Go for that A in film instead. And statistics… I wouldn’t take that in the summer (it’s very fast-paced), unless one of your strengths lies in math. Why don’t you take stats in the fall? You’'l still qualify for TAG that way. I would take classes that are not THAT work intense in the summer to ensure getting good grades. If you’re not set on taking stats, I’d suggest you look into taking a more relaxed GE class to maximize your chances of getting all As this summer.

Oh really?! I don’t need stats this summer? Math is really my weakness and I usually try to take the easiest/shortest math classes available. I do have film this summer, so I’ll try and take another elective/GE course. My counselor told me to take stats this summer but I’d much rather do it in the fall. I used to be a managerial Econ major, but now I’m biotech or physio (pre-med). So I believe I need some chem classes. I’ll work the pre-reqs out for that. Most of my classes have been GE classes (eg. sociology, psych, nutrition). I do have to take math 16A. And I only assessed into pre-calc. So I’ll see how that goes. Any advice on my major or any tips? :)

Yes, you can take your math course in the fall you apply (I did and I was TAG approved). Have you finished your English courses yet? If not, I’d take one of those.
I can’t help you with major advice, sorry.
