living conditions aside…which one is better program? has more perks/disadvantages? how’s competativeness? which campus would you choose if you plan on going to med school? are they ranked about the same?

btw, im in biological sciences for irvine and the neural/physio/behavior for davis

Davis is known for being a pretty good science school, but Irvine is improving every year in terms of its academics, especially in the sciences and engineering. If not already, Irvine will surpass Davis by the time you graduate. I would choose Irvine, although I would probably do so in terms of area. Honestly, with such trivial differences (Davis and Irvine are very close), you should consider area A LOT because that is probably the largest thing distinguishing these two universities.

In terms of getting into med school, I give the edge to Irvine.

But once again, I emphasize the importance of environment. I would think Irvine ideally wins this debate almost anytime (not big city, not rural; nice suburban city) vs. Davis (very rural).

Good luck with your decision.

Their academic reputations and selectivity are almost identical, so I would make my choice based on non-academic factors such as financial aid, campus life, and location. Davis has a better reputation in the sciences, especially biology, but I don't think it makes a huge difference for pre-meds.

I don't think UCI has or will Davis in the rankings. The reason they are ranked higher this year is due to an error on behalf of Davis:

In terms of other ranking systems, Davis is ranked as high as 17th in the country right behind Harvard.

We are on our way up with DI athletics and football (only UC besides UCLA or Cal w/ football) as well as top notch biology and engineering

There really is no reason to play the "rank" game since all of these schools are relatively comparable. The important thing is that you should remember to choose a place where you will be able to enjoy yourself and create (good) memories that will last you a lifetime.

I would disagree with atlantiz on the whole environment thing. UCI is known to be a commuter school = dead environment much of the time. Davis is a true college town with football and tons of other sports. (most of any UC) Davis is a fun and spirited school. I would consider environment by making visits to both schools. See for yourself, but Davis, Chico and Cal Poly are the last of the true college towns around this area.
