UC Davis vs. UC Irvine for medical?

I just got accepted off the UC Davis waitlist (incoming freshman), so now I’m trying to decide between that and UCI. My major is chemical engineering for UC Davis, however I intend to change into either biological science or biomedical engineering, in which I intend to go pre-med. I can’t really go to a campus visit to Davis right now, considering how I have 3 days to decide. Any advice? Thanks!

i know this is a pretty common question, but from what im reading, there are really mixed answers which supports both uc irvine and uc davis.

both UCD and UCI offer outstanding biology programs for pre-med. Both would prepare you equally well for med school. It just comes down to which bio program looks more appealing to you.

To be honest, I don’t think you can go wrong either way. You could compare the medical schools (Davis: 20th in primary care; Irvine: 83rd in primary care; both tied at 47 for research). But you’re an undergrad, so that really doesn’t matter. What does matter is the quality of your undergraduate courses, your ability to maintain a solid gpa, etc. And I believe the quality of education, and difficulty of maintaining a good gpa, will be nearly identical at both campuses. Though the programs may differ somewhat - and you should take that into consideration - I really don’t think the differences are that significant. (essentially, I don’t think it matters either way, from an academic standpoint).

So, in my opinion, you should base your decision on which campus you like better. And unfortunately the best way to do that is to visit in person. I suggest weighing a number of pros and cons about each campus, and learning as much as you can about each campus, over the next couple of days.

Bio Medical Engineering for Davis, which is why I picked Davis. =D

LATEST NSF REPORT RANKS UCD BME 1st IN California, 6th IN NATION
The just-released NSF 2008 R&D Expenditures Report ranks UC Davis biomedical/bioengineering 6th in the nation. This is up from 9th in the prior year (2007) NSF rankings. The NSF ranked UC Davis biomedical/bioengineering 1st in the UC system, and 1st among all public and private CA universities, for the third year in a row.

Davis better then UCI in overall BME rankings as well…

For Bio Sciences, Davis owns UCI.

Davis and UCI are equal in Bio Sci. your decision has to be based off factors other than academics. for example imo UC Davis enviro is way better that UCI be cause it is known as a commuter school= dead campus
