Hi guys, I’m a transfer student (sociology major) deciding between Ucd and ucsd.
I grew up in Redondo Beach, a beach city in LA, and I have lived in Santa Barbara for community college for the past 2 years. Although I got into Ucsb and I absolutely love it here, I think its time to leave the non-stop partying for a bit.
That being said though, here’s what I think I know about ucd and ucsd:
UC davis
Pros: everyone is super nice, cheap rent so I’m able to have my own room, completely new environment (NorCal VS SoCal), close to the bay/Yosemite/Berkeley/etc.
Cons: Hot summer/cold winter, far from home, not much to do (?)
UC San diego
Pros: next to the ocean, close to home, bigger party/night life scene, more prestigious school
Cons: expensive so I’d have to share a room, keeps me in my comfort zone
Can people that go to these schools please help me out!!!
You know, I don’t see anything wrong with staying nearby somewhere you love for college. I reject the idea that you have to physically travel far away from your roots to have new experiences - experiences are about seeking out new things and growing, and you don’t necessarily have to leave your home city in order to do that. Simply being an adult is going to open a world of things that you couldn’t do as a child.
I say that because your pros make you sound excited about UCSD, and there aren’t many cons (sharing a room in college is pretty standard). And I know personally I’d much rather spend 2-3 years in San Diego than Davis. (Actually, Santa Barbara sounds amazing…so I’d consider the UCSB offer too.)
UCSD is an awesome place to be especially as a transfer. The Village transfer housing is super nice with ocean views and high rises as well as a pretty socially active community. The education you’ll get will be great and you’ll get to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country while getting it.
Do not get fooled. UC Davis is middle of nowhere and is extremely hot during the summer. It is nowhere near the Bay. UC Santa Cruz is by the Bay. UC Berkeley is by the Bay. UC Davis is next to Sacramento. You will be next to a small creek that flows into the Sacramento River that eventually flows into the Bay.
