UC Davis VS. UCI VS. Cal Poly

This a thread to discuss which one is better for Premed? I want a well rounded, fun college experience as well as maintain a high GPA (3.8+) because my goal is a top medical school.
which college can give me a better undergrad experience as well as offer me good research oppurtunites, voluteering, as well as good shadowing oppurtunities?

P.S. - UCSB, is not an option, people have been suggesting this school but i cant go because i would have to live at home if i were to go there

Are you looking to major in bio?

If so, Davis has an outstanding undergrad bio program, and it should suffice for your research and other needs.

I really don’t know, any pre-meds want to answer? What I do know is that there a whole bunch of “pre-meds” here at UCI that are in the bio program, and are IN this program just because their parents tell them to, and end up regretting the decision.

You need a car for volunteering… it’s painful that there’s no hospital here besides a Kaiser, only clinics. Next closest is Newport.

Just my 2 cents. (I have a gripe against the OCTA)

would you guys also say that UCI dosent have the lively campus as other UC’s because it is a commuter school and on the weekends all the socal kids go to parents?

I admit, I am one of the freshmen who live on campus during the weekdays but go home, bc I am a “socal kid who goes home to his parents”, lol… I go home to relax and honestly, there is no place like home and your mother’s cooking!

Back on track, many of my friends from my hall and other halls stay on campus… it isn’t dead as you think it is…just make friends with people who stay on weekends.

You REALLY need a car at UCI, as you do for all other schools, to volunteer at a hospital. On the bright side, Orange County has plenty of hospitals to volunteer at… HOAG, Kaiser, CHOC, Gottschalk, etc. Gottschalk Medical Plaza is located at the edge of campus near the medical school. I scheduled an appointment there once, but decided to I didn’t need it. I have never heard of anyone volunteering there, but be headstrong. You might find something someone has never before. As for a “social” school, you get as much as you put in when it comes to college.

im pretty much leaning to a UC now. so which school is better UC Davis or Irvine in terms of easier grading curves and quality of instuctors. Like i said my goal is a top medical school so it is essential for me to have a 3.8+ gpa. (i know there are other factors to acceptance)

It’s impossible to compare… You must understand, the chances of us posters going to both campuses to take classes to rate the professors/courses is one in few. (You can by doing summer classes or transferring…)

UC Irvine school of Bio sci is restricted by a rough (F-D)17%-(C)33%-(B)33%-(A)17% grading curve (that may change with each class depending on circumstances) if that makes any difference to you but it wouldn’t to me if you look at how people chooses their colleges… ie… some people come here w/ scholarships and honors and financial situations.
