Funding for UCSB

Hey I'm hoping to go to UCSB next year and I'm kind of curious about funding.

I know either the Cal grant of the Blue and Gold Oppurtunity plan are the major ones for tuition, but I'm considered a foster youth in the CA and Federal governments eyes because for some pretty bad family circumstances I had to live in a group home from ages 13 to 16. (I'm 20 now)

And as a result my Expected Family Contribution to my education is always 0000, I am currently going to a CCC where I get the Pell Grant, Work Study, the FSEOG grant and have taken out $5k in loans in my 2 years here as an independent student.

Anyways I was wondering what kind of funding I should expect when I go to a UC, if any, other than the cal grant or blue and gold Oppurtunity plan, I have a 3.2 GPA (or I will when transferring at the moment it's a 3.13) ill have all pre major requirements and all prerequisites complete, any thoughts on what to expect financially?

Also any tips on how to get more funding (scholarships, grants etc...) at UCSB that I might qualify for so that I don't have to take out loans to pay for school, or if I do minimize them when paying for campus fees, housing and life expenses while going there.

Anything??

You will not get blue and gold because that’s for people that make under 80k, but still have some money for college. You’ll most likely get 20k in fin aid and you’ll have to come up with around 6-7k a year to pay for the rest.

Wait so why wouldn’t I get Blue and Gold lol I make less than 80k a year and I am independent? Not that it really matters if I get a Cal grant, but if I don’t yeah I’d like to get that.

Any clue what specific grants I might get? If not its all good, just wanting to research everything before I go there and just rt a bunch of random papers and everything thrown at me

This is what I found on their website:

What it takes to be eligible

Be a California resident or qualify for a nonresident tuition exemption under AB 540
Demonstrate income below $80,000 with financial need, as determined for federal need-based aid program
Be in your first four years as a UC undergraduate (first two for transfer students)
Meet other campus basic requirements for UC grant aid (for example, be enrolled at least half-time during the academic year, meet campus academic progress standards, not be in default on student loans, etc.)
Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or, if you’re an eligible non-citizen, a California Dream Act application by March 2.
Make sure your school submits a GPA verification form to the Cal Grant program, or download the form, have your school fill it out and send it to the California Student Aid Commission

From reading that it sounds like I’d be eligible, but you don’t think so?

Blue and gold is for people that have money, but not enough to fully pay for college. The program pays for their tuition. Since your efc is 0, you’ll probably get all the fin aid and grants you can get, which will pay for your tuition and some.

efc 0: eligible for all types of aid (most likely around 20k)
B&G: eligible for tuition aid (around 14k)

Huh that’s weird, does it say that on the UC site?

And thanks for the heads up do u go to a UC?

Oh and I just went on the UCSB financial aid site they have a financial aid estimator that gives and estimate of what you’ll get(but wouldn’t let me enter my foster care/ward of the court status)

It said the estimate in grants I’d get was $23,500 and a self help award of $9500 and an estimated EFC of $100.00

What does the self help award mean? Work study?

And I’m assuming that amount doesn’t include scholarships so maybe I could get more to cover the missing like 8k or at least I hope so…does that sound about right?

I don’t go to a UC currently, but I will be attending UCSB this Fall. That estimate seems a bit high, so I wouldn’t rely on it. I honestly wouldn’t worry about finances at the moment since you first have to get accepted, and given your GPA, it’s going to be tough. Have you looked at the TAG program? It’ll guarantee you admission to UCSB, given that you meet the requirements. What’s your major?

<a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors;

You’ll apply for it this September, so try to get above a 3.2 by September ( some people say that having a 3.2 after Fall will still count, but I’m not sure).

Did you do the TAG?

And what seems high the grants? Maybe it’s cause I’m independent and my EFC is practically 0 though it should be actually 0.

Yeah you have to have a 3.2 by the end of Fall, UCSB doesn’t even review them until March, unlike Davis who reviews them within a month of submission.

I have a couple friends who got in w a 3.13

And I’m taking two classes over the summer and 6 in the Fall. According to my calculations if I get 2 A’s in the summer I’ll be at a 3.24. And I’ll just need to carry that in the fall.

I’m a disadvantaged student so I’ve been told I get some extra consideration, though I doubt that. But what will work in my favor is that I’ll have all the pre-major requirements completed prior to admission and I won’t go in as a pre-major and ill be IGETC certified with an AA degree too.

I started off really shaky but I’ve really picked it back up these last 2 semester and hopefully I continue workin for those A’s.

Oh do you know on the TAG if you have to enter non transferrable courses too or not?

And money is my main motivation so I’m kinda worried about it, I’m going to college to make money and be successful and I don’t want to come out with excessive unplayable loans.

My major is sociology

I didn’t TAG
My efc is 0 and I’m only getting 20k
Your friends are the exception, not the rule  The average admitted GPA for Soc was 3.41 in 2011. With a GPA of 3.2, that puts you at the bottom 25% of applicants. So really try to TAG.
http://bap.ucsb.edu/IR/PDB/files/profiles/Letters_and_Science/Social_Sciences/1112_Sociology.pdf</a>

There’s a huge upward trend with the admitted GPA, so I an only assume its getting more competitive.
Yes, you have to enter all course work including F’s and W’s even if you retook those classes.

What’s your GPA if you don’t mind me asking? It’s probably a 3.5 lol right?

And I like to consider myself as the exception to the rule, but I am going to do the TAG.

I can only assume that most (75% have not done the majority and 97.5% have not/will not have completed all along with IGETC) of those students have not/will not have completed a majority or all of the pre-major requirements and be accepted as a full major, based on information from counselors and the Career transfer center at my campus.

I know you have to enter all coursework including F’s and W’s but I’m asking about coursework that only applies to the Associates degree and is non transferrable, because when I’m filling it out they don’t have those classes as options to enter, like Work Experience -Job interviews, Counseling -Student Success those kinda of classes

Yes, I was admitted with a 3.54 and I finished ccc with a 3.7. I’m not positive on this, but I believe those numbers (link I provided) are from admitted students, not people that applied. I’m not sure about your 3 question, but if you received credits and those courses show up on your transcript, you might want to put them on the application.

Is there one that’s more recent like 2012 even? To get a better idea?

And why would UC’s care about non transferrable non UC coursework, it has nothing to do with them and their calculations haha it’s a kind of confusing process.

That’s a good GPA lol I’d say you jut had a steady GPA the whole time right? Like above 3.2?

Congrats

If it appears on your transcript, I would enter it- even if it is non-transferable.
I typed in a .3 unit college counseling class, even though it was not provided on the drop down menu nor will be calculated in my UC GPA.

How would they know not to calculate it?

New question: What exactly does EOP do to help students at UCSB? If anyone knows

@Matt4200 EOP is the Educational Opportunity Program. It helps disadvantaged students with things like priority registration, tutoring, etc. Here’s a more detailed summary of the EOP Program from UCSB:

Okay, it says they service all students so that’s not very particular.

Do they provide fee waivers? Or any advantages besides counseling and priority registration or tutoring?

They’re kind of vague on the UCSB site compared to UC Davis or UCLA

Is it the same office between the three colleges as in they provide basically all the same things or are they completely different?

Bump bump bumppp

Matt4200,

Given your information about being in Foster Care and having an EFC of 0, you will most likely get the Blue & Gold reward.

I also have an EFC of 0 and I am going to get about a little over $22k in Scholarships and Grants. I am also being offered $2300 in Work-Study. You will probably get something similar.
