hey i was just wondering how to calculate my gpa for UC's. i have read all the rules on the website but i dont know if i am calculatiing my gpa properly. i would really appreciate it if somebody could give me the weighted and capped gpa that UC's look at. all of the classes are UC approved and that includes the honors classes as far s i know

sophomore year
Honors English a-/a-
honors history a-/a
honors algebra two/trig b/b
honors chemistry a/a
spanish a-/a
theology (UC approved) a
computer programming a

Junior year- almost identical to sophomore year but with two semester of theology and no computer programming

Drop any -or +. Each A per semester class equals 4.00, each B 3.00. Sophomore year you have 10 As which add up to 40 and two Bs which add up to 6. Thus sophomore year you have 46 for 12 total semester hours. Assume the same by end of junior year and you have 92 points for 24 semester hours. You get to add one point per weighted class per semester, an honors or AP. Sophomore year totals 8 honors extra points and assuming you have the same number of junior honors courses that would be another 8. However, you can add no more than 4 weighting points from sophomore year and no more than 8 total. Thus you get to add 8 weighting points to 92, giving you 100. Divide that by 24 and your UC GPA is 4.17.

that was the same gpa i calculated for myself but i was unsure about the whole 8 semester point thing and wasnt sure was my exact gpa would be. i also have one more question based on that 4.17 gpa where do you think i can get into. i know that uc Berkeley and ucla are pretty big reaches but i think that ucsd i a high target school and ultimately where i wanna go
my sat scores havent come back yeet but i am assuming at the moment 1950 or up i know its not great but that is prolly the lowest it will be
also what gpas are reported by the ucs on sites like naviance is it there UC scale or your personal high school scale

bobtheboy is that true because my gpa would then be a 4.5 which could make me a shoe in to berkeley with better test scores but even if i had better test scores i would not get into berkeley

thanks shrinkrap for the link… while all of the courses were UC approved for some reason honors english and honorrs algebra 2 were not given an extra point so now i i have 92 base points plus 2 honors for sophomore yearr and 3 for junior because i am taking APUSH Ap english and AP physics making the total 97 credits which i then divide by 24 for a UC gpa of 4.0416666666667. i guess thats ok well anyways can anybody tell me which UC’s are reaches targets and safeties and if you are wondering what my school administered weighted gpa is, its 4.33 because of the A-'s

What I mean is that the weighted-capped gpa is used solely for admissions eligiblity, i.e, do you clear the 3.0 threshold. The application readers will see all of your gpa’s: weighted-capped, weighted-uncapped, and unweighted. The reader will also have a ‘rank’ of gpa’s from your HS who apply to UC. What they do with all those stats is the magic of holistic admissions.

OP: Many required courses, do not receive a bonus point. Since UC started requiring Alg II for admissions, they dropped the bonus point for Honors Alg II. Honors Eng II will not recieve the bonus point, but Honors English III will if approved at your HS. Ditto Honors Chem. Honors Precalc/trig will receive a bonus point, as will every AP course.

Also, the bonus points are per semester. Thus, APUSH = 2 bonus points.

thanks for all the help guys. i still have one more question adn thats
i have a UC gpa of 4.17 (if all 8 bonus points are added). i guess thats ok well anyways can anybody tell me which UC’s are reaches targets and safeties and if you are wondering what my school administered weighted gpa is, its 4.33 because i have a lot of A-'s. lets assume my SAT scores are average for my gpa so 1950 and up and the EC’s and sport are all average i know that riverside and merced are safeties but i need help gauging how i far in the admissions proccess of the other UC’s. and if anybody has the UC gpa averages for accepted seniors it would really be helpful i would liuke the chances to be based solely on my gpa though… thanks in advacne

I posted a link to the stats for UCLA and Cal above. You can google “UC whatever freshman admission profile pdf” for others you are interested in. You can also try statfinder.

I’m not positive, but pretty sure that not all honors classes count as weighted. You would have to check online and the UC Website, but for instance, at my school, English 2 Honors does not count as UC weighted but Pre-Calculus Honors and Chemistry Honors do count as weighted. My point being that when you “capped” your honors classes at 8, not all of those classes might actually be weighted in the UC System. I was able to find out which classes at my school were UC weighted from a simple Google search, you should do the same.

When you go to Shrinkrap’s UC Statfinder link in post #11 click on “Custom Tables”, answer a few questions, and then enter up to 3 “mean characteristics” at a time to see what the admit rates are for someone that matches your profile at any or all of the UCs.

@shrinkrap thanks for the link @jyang ya i know that honors english and honors algebra 2 trig are not wighted by UC standards but i still have four honors points in sophomore year for two semesters of Honors World History II and Honors Chem and i would have 6 points in junior year but you can only add up to eight which would then make my gpa 4.17
