UC GPA v.s. overall GPA when TAGing and math in the spring?

History major

currently my overall GPA at my CCC is 3.08
but the UC transferrable one is 3.2 at the moment

I screwed up a ton when I first entered college and dropped out not too long after(academic probation, etc…) which is my GPA is so low. I’ve been getting straight As now and got put on the honor’s list. The only low grades I’ve gotten are Bs in nontransferable math courses because math is really difficult for me.

I want to transfer next year to UC Davis with their TAG and by then my transferrable GPA will probably be a little higher. I know the minimum GPA is 3.2 but I’m wondering if they also factor in the overall GPA? Does it matter at all? I hoping that all that matters is the transfer one.

I have 2 more math courses to take. One I’m taking this fall and the second one I’ll be taking in the spring which is the math requirement class. Will this disqualify me from applying for fall? My English requirement is done and my IGETC is almost done as well. I just need my language class and something else.
The counselor at my school said I should be fine because my major is not science/math related. Is that true?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, your counselor is wrong. You need to have your math requirement done by Fall to qualify for TAG to Davis as per the tag matrix page 3 on the right-mot column under “Completion deadline for mathematics course (UC-M)”.

I would consider taking a stats course in the Fall to meet the TAG requirement by the deadline. I believe the only TAGs that accept a Spring math course are Irvine and Merced.

Yeah I’ve read that stuff over and over so I wasn’t sure about what the counselor said. I can’t take stats yet because I’m still one math prereq away from it. The math class I’m planning to take this spring is going to be that stats course

I guess I’ll have to suck it up and apply for 2017 :frowning:

You can still apply for Fall 2016! You may still get in, you just won’t be able to TAG. I think you should apply anyway, UC’s like upward trends.

I’ll probably only have a 3.3 by the end of this Fall though. I have no EC because of my job. I don’t know if that would even be good enough to be accepted normally.

3.3 is low. If you cannot get the stats class in fall, you should probably wait. However, UC Davis TAG has that requirement that you need to be a full time CCC student the year immediately prior to UC enrollment. They say they make exceptions based on their sole discretion, and I know of two people who were told by Davis TAG their part -time attendance seemed valid, but then they were denied the TAG after they applied. The “sole discretion” line is vague. So unless you plan 12 semester units next fall and spring, I would consider TAGing elsewhere.

I have major prep courses and other classes I can take that can make up 12 units, so its fine. I really want to go to Davis so I’ll just have to wait a little longer

@lindyk8 3.3 isn’t too bad for a prospective History major at UCD (in my opinion)

If you’ve got the $70 for an application, I’d say ‘why not’?

Worse case scenario, you get rejected and just TAG the following year.

true, although I’m feeling pretty defeated atm. I’m pretty pissed that the people at my school said I’d be fine doing a TAG with my math req planned in the Spring. I got excited and now I just want to go rip them a new one.

Honestly, if I were you I’d print out the TAG matrix, highlight the RIGHT information, and go back in and show it to the person you talked to. Save other students from the same thing you’re going through.

I’m half tempted to do that but I might just cry the next time I go to meet my counselor. I’ve been working myself insane this past year. One of my professors wants to get me on as a writing tutor at my CCso I gave that going for me

If the only reason you cant take stats is a lack of a prerequisite and you can try to test out of it through the assessment offices at the other local community college districts and have them transfer your assessment score to your primary college. It’s worth a shot if it means you can take stats in the fall and complete your TAG.

If your in San Diego County, I know students at Mesa and Miramar do this all the time through Southwestern / Grossmont / MiraCosta with minimal review from Khan Academy / iTunesU / etc.

My counselor also told me wrong information for TAG, and I’m so angry I didn’t catch it sooner. I know how you feel, it’s a lot of wasted time and expectations.

I go to SW so I’ll try to do this next week before classes begin. Hopefully the tutoring center can help me review a little. I tried testing out of a lower math class once and it didn’t work because my math skills suck.

Honestly, the problem with applying this year, while sure it’s a why not, it’s very emotionally draining and defeating to get rejected. You might get in with a 3.3, but it’s just overall low, and the odds are higher that you won’t. Of course, you can do what you want but one extra year is no big deal. You’ll have a stronger GPA, more coursework completed, and just more peace of mind during the process. It isn’t a race.

Yeah I honestly don’t think I’ll bother applying normally. I’m only in such a hurried feeling because I’ll be 24 next year by the time I get to apply for TAG and I feel like I’m way behind.

But you’re completely right. I’ll have a way better GPA by then.

Yeah, I get it being 24, but it isn’t that big a deal in the scope of life. But go ahead and apply this year if you want to. It’s just very stressful, and I assume it would be even if you psyche yourself up that you won’t get in.
