Hi I am new to college confidential. :)

My question is regarding UC GPA. I have read that it disregards 9th grade. Does that mean the UCs dont even look at your freshman year grades?

Hi I am new to college confidential. :)

My question is regarding UC GPA. I have read that it disregards 9th grade. Does that mean the UCs dont even look at your freshman year grades?

UCs use 9th grade courses for a-g requirements. They don't include that in GPA calculation.

OK, flying by the seat of my pants here -- but my thoughts:

UC GPA (summer after 9th grade through June of 11th grade) is used in the formulas for ELC = Eligibility in the Local Context, and for the UCs that use a formula of GPA + SAT to render a numeric score upon which to base their admission decision. Formula UCs also add a significant amount of points for single parent home, 1st generation college attendee, crummy high school, etc. I cannot remember which are the formula schools, but I think they are all except UCLA and UC Berkeley.

For UCLA and UCB, UC GPA is just one point of data. They look at it, but they also look at rigor of schedule, ECs, and other intangibles, just like any selective college. See UCLA's recommendations to prospective applicants:

In other words, for UCLA and UCB, 9th grade performance is taken into account along with everything else the applicant did in high school.
