UC Hopeful

I am a junior in high school with a UC calculated 3.95 GPA. in my sophomore year, I took 3 honors courses, one which was UC approved. This year, I am taking one AP class, Calculus A/B.

My test scores so far are:
SAT: 1790
ACT: took it a couple of days ago. I think I did well.
Subject Tests: in May. I'm going to take Chemistry and Math 2.

My ECs aren't spectacular:
-Mens Varsity Tennis (10-12th grade)
-CSF (10-12)
-NHS (10-12)
-HOSA (11-12)
-Local Animal Shelter for a bit during the summer.
-I've worked at McDonalds since November 2009.
-Academic Decathalon next year.

I'm in the top 8% of my class, and Latino (Peru). I am first gen college in the U.S., and I hope to go on to either UC Davis, UC Irvine, or UCSD.

I would like to know how my chances are for these three schools. Am I aiming too high? How well do I have to do on my ACT and SAT to be competitive? How important are honors/AP courses? I am pursuing a career in health, and I'm interested in a biomedical engineering major.

Thanks for helping me out.

Oop, forgot to add EC: camp counselor for 6th graders for a week (10-12).

I’m most interested in UCSD.

Try checking out the UCSD summer extension program.
USCD works on a point system and they give a lot of points if you do this program. Its just a couple months during summer and super fun.
You might want to try to get a leadership position in a club or organization whether it be secretary or president.
Since you’re minority, first gen you have a pretty good chance.

Just from these stats, I would say you have a relatively good chance at UCI and UCDavis but UCSD might be a slight stretch with your SAT scores and weak honors and ap courses. (Although that depends on whether your high school even offers many honors/ap courses) Consider taking it again to get above 1800.

Thanks! I’ll definitely check out the summer program, if it’s not too late. I’m mostly concerned about the cost, because money has been tight lately.

I plan on taking the SAT I again in June. My goal is over 1900, so I think that will boost my chances.

For my senior year, I’ll be taking 5 AP classes, two of which are semester long. I just wasn’t sure how much the rigor of my senior courses will affect my chances.

Thanks again!

I got 1790 on my SAT too lol but i didn’t get into UCI. however i think you do have a decent shot at davis and irvine considering your decent GPA and activities, and your SAT isn’t too far below the average. UCSD will definitely be tougher, but if you do get your score into the high 1900’s at least i’d call it a low reach. good luck on the subject tests!

Thanks! It’s been tough googling people’s chances that have the same stats as me, so this really helped.

How imprtant are senior year AP classes? And will the summer programs increase my chance of admission?

Thanks again!
