UC Irvine chances

First of all, I would like to know what the minimum SAT score you need to get in, so that I have an idea.

I'm only a sophmore, going to be a Junior 06-07. I'm also a SoCal resident and high income.

So far I have a cummalative GPA of 3.6 through Freshman and Sophmore years.

I haven't taken the SAT for real yet, but I've taken the actual test 3 times now (some teacher gave me some ones that were used for the 06' year, and I sat down for the real amount of time and did it).

I got a 1580 the first time, then a 1660, and now a 1670. I got a 610 on Writing, 550 on Grammar, but a horrendous 500 on the Math on the time I got 1660. But for the 1670 one I got a 570 in Math, 560 in Grammar, but for some reason I dropped 70 points in Writing and got a 540. I know I can do better because I haven't studied as much as I should have, so what do you think is a realistic goal for me at this point? Oh and for the essay, I only know what I got on the 3rd time, and I got a 10/12.

Since I'm not allowed to take AP courses (i've only taken a few honors classes so far) until 11th grade, it's kind of irrelevant for me to post my grades.

Oh and I'm doing horrible on EC stuff but I can make that up. I'm starting at the library, hospital. I've done stuff for school plays (merchandise sales). I was in Indian Club Freshman year but I moved to a different school in Sophmore year and was really unfamiliar with how the school works so I didn't register for a club in time.

I wouldn't mind anyone posting the chances at Riverside either.

Thanks

Alright, first of all, you need to get great grades in junior year. The average UC GPA (which is NOT cumalative...) of those accepted to Irvine is a 3.89. You can use this site to calculate your UC GPA:

https://pathways.ucop.edu/doorways/list/

Enter your high school's name into the search.

Browse through the list of classes that turn up for your school, and locate all of the classes listed there that you took in your sophomore year

Calculate your UNWEIGHTED GPA (no plusses or minuses) for these classes, and ONLY give 1 point extra credit for any honors classes you might have taken that are listed there as a certified honors course (they have a little star next to the class's name).

If this new GPA is a 3.8 or above, you're doing fine.

If this new GPA is between a 3.8 and a 3.5, you're doing alright, but need to do a lot better in your junior year.

If this new GPA is less than a 3.5, you'll have to start working hard to get your grades up.

The UC GPA only counts classes taken in your junior and sophomore years, so doing well in those 2 years is key. It uses this format. I'd imagine, however, that if you got all A's in your junior year, or almost all A's, they'd consider that an "upward trend", which would help your chances at Irvine.

In addition, your SAT scores as they are right now are possible for UC Irvine, but it would be a challenge getting in. You could still get in with all your scores in the 500 zone, but if you studied a lot and worked hard, you could probably raise your SAT scores up to the low 600's. Really though, the higher, the better! Just to give you a perspective, the averages for those accepted to UC Irvine this year are 602 Verbal (Grammar), 640 Math, and 612 Writing. When rounded, this gives an overall score of 1850.

As for UC Riverside...the average UC GPA is a 3.59 for those accepted. The average SAT scores are a 543 Verbal, 586 Math, and 552 Writing, for a composite of 1680.

In short, I think if you prepared enough and did well your junior year, your chances at Riverside would be great, and your chances at Irvine would be pretty good too.

Best of luck to you!

UCR: Match

Thanks for the info.

I'm kind of worried though since they don't count freshman year. I had a 3.6 in both semesters of freshman year, and then a 4.0 1st semester of sohpmore year (weighted, but unweighted 3.8). But then 2nd semester of Sophmore year I got a 3.0 (2.8 unweighted) because of one stupid elective class where I got a C because I didn't donate money to help support the class.

So I would have to get a near 4.0 next year to really get my grades up. I've already selected my classes:

AP Bio
Math Analysis/Pre-Calc H
English 3 H
AP U.S History
Spanish 2

I'm thinking of dropping AP U.S History though because I have to do a lot of stuff next year, like volunteering since I didn't do any fresh and soph years, and I also have to prepare for the SAT. I don't want my other grades to suffer because of the course load. I know why my grades were terrible second semester of soph year, I'm lethargic as heck. Going to have to change that next year!

If I do well in Junior year (now that you know my GPA for sophmore year), do you think I can still have a good chance of getting into Irvine?

i didn;t take AP US history b/ i thought that it would also take too much time too but I took the AP test and got a 4, so if u're considering dropping it, do it for the extra time that you'll have, but if you want to raise your weighted GPA, then take the AP class
