UC Irvine Fall 2023 Transfer Thread

So confused for those of you that got rejected from Psych, especially if you did TAG. My son attends a Bay Area CCC and applied to UCI figuring it was a long shot. His GPA is about 3.55, and he wasn’t organized enough to do TAG. He just got accepted to UCI in Psychology.

I would contact UCI to find out why you were denied especially if you TAG’d.

Accepted. Computer Science.

I had a 3.78 with tag and rejected I’m thinking it was a mistake

Son rejected at Irvine for Computer Science. GPA: 3.89. UC to UC transfer. Taken all CS prereqs (UC transfer CS pathway courses including Math, Physics, etc. courses). Studying Computer Engg in the origin UC.

Probably means UC to UC transfer for CS is very very hard. Had decided to transfer only to Berkeley, LA or San Diego but not getting into even Irvine may mean getting to those 3 UCs may have very very low chance. Still no worries - because there are several positives staying at the current UC including possibility to graduate early.

Major: Software Engineer
GPA: 3.30
Extracurricular: I have 12 of them, 2 of which are starting own companies on ecommerce and rental
First Gen Immigrant
Income Bracket: Middle Class

4.0 lol

That is fantastic, congratulations to your son! I had a question as far as whether your son did the Python requirements or another programming language like C++ or Java, which I understand should fulfill the requirements too.

Son is waitlisted (Computer SC with 4.0 GPA), fairly disappointed but still hopeful on other UC. If waitlist decisions do not come out prior to SIR date (June 1), can he SIR with another UC (which had accepted him), and change decision if later admitted from the waitlist?

If you are on the waitlist, it is expected the student SIR’s to another school until they hear from the waitlist. If admitted off the waitlist, the enrollment deposit at the other school will be forfeited and then the student enroll in the new school.

He did C++. I was a computer science major at UCI a long time ago also. My son is waiting to hear back from some of the other UC’s later this month to see what his options are.

Thank you, this is very helpful! How I wished all decisions came out the same day. How many universities can we SIR? Is there any risk doing that other than money forfeited? (does SIRing one UC cause another UC to reconsider one’s position in the waitlist?)

You can only SIR to one school by the deadline but you can remain on multiple waitlists without affecting your waitlist status.

So happy for him! My son was a bit deflated being rejected for CS as his preferred major and it appears he didn’t get considered for Software Engineering as a 2nd major. He took Java and C++ and took more than the required courses. He was in progress for his assembly course and differential equations in the fall when he applied. He also did leadership and volunteering so not sure what else he could have done. I was told that higher preference is given to students who have finished all of the prerequisites by fall. My son’s primary concern is there are other UCs he’s applied to that are even more selective. Fortunately, he’s gotten acceptances for CS at other schools so we’ll wait and see. Thank you again for responding…this is a great forum for parents!

Did anyone get regents? I haven’t seen one person that’s gotten it so far, and I thought it was typically released with decisions

Rejected from Bus Admin with 4.0 GPA and combination of AP’s and college coursework to satisfy transfer requirements. Reading above that several transfers who’ve used the TAG got rejected. Meanwhile, one of my friends with a lower GPA and fewer extracurriculars gained acceptance to the same major. Not trying to sound salty or like I can’t handle rejection, but is it possible that UCI messed up somewhere with its decisions? I’m now worried I missed a requirement or something and plan on getting in contact with the office of admissions. Wondering if I’m the only one raising an eyebrow.

Each school is different so I don’t think you can gauge being rejected from UCI as any indicator with the other UCs. I have had a pretty extensive career in software engineering and currently hold a senior leadership role (SVP) in a software engineering organization. As long as your son gets a good educational foundation and works hard, it won’t matter as much where he goes for his undergrad to have a successful career in software (I have seen people do very well and never even go to college - this is the few though). Good luck to your son.

as far as I know, as long as he’s in a decent school (some cal states are great options, not sure if he applied to them or not), tries for internships or projects he will have a good future. @Dan_C made some good points.

got accepted

Thank you Dan for your thoughts! We’ll wait for additional decisions…best wishes to your son!!
