UC Irvine vs San Jose State University. HELP

I just wanted to hear some opinions.
I’m going to keep it short and sweet, I would appreciate some of your input though!

basically here is what is happening, I got accepted into UCI my dream school, but not my dream major (physics). Got accepted into SJSU dream major (mechanical engineering) not at all my dream school.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this!! I’m having a hard time deciding!!

My sister just experienced the same thing; UCSD for Biochemistry but ASU for Biomedical Engineering. She chose UCSD by a long shot. She’s just going to do Biomedical Engineering for graduate school if her medical school aspirations don’t work out.

Just go to UCI for Physics w/ Mechanical EE minor or sufficient amount of classes. Internships, extracurriculars, etc. of course too. Let me tell you though, SJSU is not really a graduate school since they don’t offer too many Ph.D’s, so if it ever comes to Doctorate school, you won’t have the option at any CSUs (plus silicon valley, HELLO!?) where as you would at UCs, including UCI.

I will admit though, this is a tough decision…but if I had to choose right now, it would be SJSU (biased since I live in SoCal, love to explore).

@elefish92 thank you for you input! This is a very hard decision. I am hoping after the first or second quarter I could switch to mechanical engineering, but I heard it’s definitely not easy especially for a transfer student.

IDK yet tho, because if I go to UCI I am putting myself in a scenario where they won’t let met switch and I would be fine with physics (applied physics emphasis) if I saw more jobs! I want to work for NASA, SpaceX, or somewhere cool after I graduate, but I don’t see those opportunities with a physics degree :c

I personally was in a very similar situation to yours. My first choice when I applied was actually UCSB, but while I was accepted I did not get my first choice major (EE). But I was accepted to UCI for EE, and ultimately I decided that being an engineer was more important to me, so I went with UCI. This really comes down to whether you consider your school or your major to be more important.

@ARandomPerson1 Thank you for your input. Being an Engineering is much more important to me as well, but here is the thing there is a possibility that I could change my major once I transfer but the chances seem slim, idk if I should take the gamble.
Either way thank you for your input, you are the second person to tell me this. I have to decide tomorrow since tomorrow is the last day I could apply for housing.

NASA is close to SJSU and UCI, they have respective locations in northern and southern California. I will say this also, I also agree that the level of the program do matter too. I’m a current junior in high school and 2 schools that I really want to go to wouldn’t work out since their not that great in applied mathematics nor statistics. So I replaced the 2 schools with institutions that have good programs (although not really bad schools, but just not great aspects as my top 2 does) for now, and I’ll probably end up applying there anyways. Also, it would be nice to go to SJSU for undergraduate and UCI for graduate, not only will you have another chance for ME at UCI, but you will get the bragging rights to say “Yeah dude, I went to college all around California…did internships at sick ass companies like Google and Facebook back at SJSU and NASA over here at UCI”.

My vote for SJSU undergrad and work your butt off for UCI ME for grad school if needed. You’ll get many experiences and your desire to do your wanted major. Remember though, I am just one person, go ask as much people as you can and then come to a decision. Reddit is a good place too; studentsreview and other review sites also. You’ll be fine of where ever you go to though, good luck.
