UC Merced Vs. UCSD

I am a Sophomore at UC Merced studying Human Biology. I decided to apply to transfer, and got accepted into UCSD. I am a little bit skeptical to transfer, as I have been in UC Merced for a while, and have grown to like it. But i was wondering if there would be any advantages Career wise if I transfer to UCSD. I have been accepted as a Human Biology major in the Sixth college.
I heard that it is very hard to get the classes that you want. I was wondering if that is true.
Also if it is helpful, I am trying to apply for dental school. So will graduating out of UCSD with a Good GPA, and DAT scores give me a better chance of being accepted to a good Dental School, as compared to graduating from UC Merced with the same?

UCSD is known for its excellent biology program! So I’m guessing that a biology degree from UCSD is highly respected by Dental Schools. UCM simply hasn’t been around long enough to have reputable programs. That, however, doesn’t have to mean that a degree from Merced will render you with a smaller chance of getting accepted into a Dental School. If you’re happy at Merced and don’t necessarily want to go to San Diego, I’d say that there is nothing wrong with staying at UCM.

First of all, have you visited UCSD, and do you see yourself liking it over there more than at Merced? I took a short visit to UC Merced, and I really liked the peaceful atmosphere over there. It’s likely very different at SD.

I Haven’t visited UCSD yet, so i do not know what to expect, other than what i have seen online. But like it here in UC Merced, the only reason i want to transfer is because i feel that UCSD will be better for my career in the future. But i do not know if that is entirely true. That is basically what i am trying to get an answer to.

If you have a solid GPA at UCM, and you like it there, I’d stay there. If any of the dental schools look straight down their noses at you for going to the newest school in the UC system, then you probably don’t want to go to that school anyway.

If you have time to visit UCSD before the decision deadline, do it. Seeing pictures online is no substitute to visiting the campus in person. Also, go on a weekday, so you really get to see what life is like on campus. Call and ask some of the Human Biology professors beforehand, and ask if you could sit in on a class or two. Take a tour of the campus, as well.

Bottom line, you need to know what you’re getting yourself into, before you sign the statement of intent to register.

UCSD has a great dental club which is recognized nation wide with their clinical volunteer work… That is a great thing to put on your dental application.

go to UCSD then join PDS be active there’s your ticket to dental school along with GPA and volunteer work.
