UC Merced

Do you think UC Merced will be great?

No. Not really.

i think it will. very cool campus.

I've been trying to look for pictures, but I can't find them.

I'm interested in it...I'm out of state though. :-)

great? if it was located in a (much) better area, it could've been the next great american university. instead, it's going to struggle to climb the UC totem pole, and probably won't crack the top 3 in the foreseeable future, if ever. perhaps it can develop to be a mid-level UC in the next 50 years. but it takes time to be good (and even longer to be great); UCI is on the rise but this is after like 40 years but it still doesn't have strong national name-recognition. part of UCI's rise could be attributed to a good location: good campus location, located near a booming biotech/high tech industry, and a huge developing community (south orange county). merced is lacking a lot of that.

one the one hand, those in charge say they want to make merced into a great university. on the other, merced's goal is to reach out to the farming communities, many which produce few students that go on to college. seems like two different things going on there, and the latter is more in line with reality. but even its goal of reaching out seems kind of out of place in merced.... i wonder why they didn't choose fresno, which is more of the central california hub.

but for sure, going to merced can be a different experience. you can be a trailblazer in the first american university built in the 21st century. you get everything brand new. and your degree will be worth more in the future than it is now!

Here's how it will look like when completed:

UC Merced will find its niche academically, meeting the needs of California's Central Valley region. It will be a premier university just like ALL of the UCs. It'll take 10-15 years, but will certainly be on the same level as Santa Cruz. In 20 years, it might be on the same level as Santa Barbara and Davis. Merced will not become another Berkeley or UCLA, but it doesn't have to.
