UC personal insight questions #6

Q: What is your favorite subject and how has it influenced you + what did you do with that passionate subject (In/Outside of school)?

Ok, so I know that if you love science then of course you gotta be in some sort of science clubs/org outside of school (e.g STEM Club/ research org/ science fair, internships, etc) blah blah

But what if you’re passionate about history? What sort of “activities” could you even do outside of the classroom besides volunteering at a museum? There’s no “history” club at my school nor is there a museum even close by. What are some examples?

OK, I’m the mom of 3 teenagers and a high school math teacher.

And, while I hated every science course I ever took, I love weather. I love extreme weather— storms and heat waves and blizzards. And while I know they can be devastating, and sincerely pray that no one will be in harm’s way, I’m a total storm geek. I watch The Weather Channel-- I was up till almost 2 am rewatching episodes of Tornado Alley. Anytime there’s bad weather headed our way, my 86 year old mom knows she can expect a call from me, just to make sure she’s prepared. My students soon learn that I’m the go to person on the odds of a snowstorm being severe enough to increase the likelihood of a snow day. While I hate the cold, I love a good snow storm, and my family and friends all indulge me as I talk about it.

Another example: While we live in NY, my mom’s parents and oldest brother were born in Newfoundland, Canada. Our last link to Newfoundland, my mom’s cousin, passed away a few months ago. Since then, I’ve found myself reading several books on Newfoundland: Death on the Ice, Tsunami, and The Day the World Came to Visit. It’s not the same thing as a family tree, but in my own way I’m learning more about the place my grandparents came from.

So, your thing is history. Great. What do you do with history? What books have you read, what do you love on the History Channel, what have you researched to death simply because it interests you? It doesn’t have to link to a career , but what do you do with your love of history? Have you researched your own family history? Visited Civil War battlegrounds? Listened to the 911 tapes of 9/11? What historic sites are on your bucket list? The Parthenon? Normandy Beach? Pearl Harbor? A White House Tour?

If it’s something you love, then it’s something you choose to spend time on-- and in this technological age, that’s easy enough to do, regardless of exactly what it is you love.
