I got accepted into UCSD and I submitted my SIR to attend not knowing I’d be classified as a non-resident…
I’m a CA resident but my my parents don’t live in California therefore they’re not CA residents. I live with my brother who is a California resident and who also FULLY supports me. I gave them all of my brothers tax info, and bills supporting that he pays for everything but got classified non-resident because my brother is not my parent…
I get leftover scholarship from the CC I attend currently and I also qualify for the Calstate instate scholarship.
If I appeal would there be a chance they’d reclassify me as a California resident? And if so, how should I write the appeal?
Please help! My family does not have enough money to pay for the $55,000 out of state tuition since I would not be getting the Calstate scholarship if I’m classified as out of state
Thanks!
Did you come to live with your brother when you started at community college? If so then your primary purpose of being in Ca was to attend college full time. That would be why you were classified as OOS.
I lived in SF for my first year of college but I moved down to go to a different school because the living cost and the private school tuition was getting out of my hand.
My brother moved out to LA 2 years ago also for work and I happened to move in with him because it was the best to live together
It doesn’t sound like YOU meet the UC residency requirements because YOU are not financially independent.
http://ucop.edu/residency/
“3. Financial independence
If you’re an unmarried undergraduate under the age of 24 and your parent(s) are not California residents, you must be able to verify financial independence for the two full years immediately preceding the term you wish to enroll. Graduate students are presumed to be financially independent unless they were claimed as a dependent on their parents’ federal tax return for the most recent tax year.”
From the UC understanding residency site.
Yes I do realize I’m not financially independent which is why I thought proving that my brother supports me financially would be able to make the requirements…and this goes for any California Universities right?
Everyone (and his brother) is trying to get CA residency to get instate tuition. Your success is not likely.
So where might you go instead? You could investigate whether there are schools in the state where your parents live that are affordable and still taking students.
CSUs have similar residency requirements but if I’m not mistaken, its a questionnaire that you take that determines residency when they aren’t sure if you qualify as residence or non-residence.
I have no choice of going back to where I lived before moving to CA which is GA but my major is not so great out in Georgia…I will most likely be paying out of state tuition in GA too because my parents amended their tax returns, took me out of their dependency for my brother as we thought that would get me classified as a resident for tuition purposes. So I’m kind of up in the air right now…it’s very discouraging
I assume you will be considered a GA resident. On the GSU website, it says: To be considered for in-state tuition privileges, you or your parent(s) must have resided in the state of Georgia for a minimum of 12 consecutive months immediately prior to enrollment at a college or university. To aid us in clarifying your residency status, please provide a copy of you and/or your parents’ (if divorced, both mother’s and father’s) State Income Tax Return for the immediately preceding year.
Your parents live there. It isn’t entirely about who claims you on their income tax – you could be claiming your own deduction and still be a GA resident.
That’s the thing, like I said, my parents amended the tax return so that my brother who is a CA resident has me as his dependent and not theirs anymore to help get classified as a UC resident here…so things are really complicated right now
For educational purposes tax returns are there to see if you qualify for financial aid. Your parents amending you only help out your brother since he will get a tax break for filing you as an dependent. You cannot legally have him as a parent when filing for financial aid or residency since you have living parents. If it was like that, Billy Bob could file with his second cousin and get California residency. They have those rules set to insure that it is not that easy to obtain residence or else most good schools like the UC system would be overflowing with applicants.
I just got an email from UCI and I see on my financial aid awards that UCI grants are based on financial needs and when I compared it to the description of UCSD grants, it said that it was based on California residency and FAFSA information. Does that mean for UCI grant is not based upon residency and I will get my UCI grant no matter what?
The california legislature made it illegal for public funds to be used on out of state students so it is probably unlikely that UCI would give you much aid either.
@jnghnbt
How long did it take for you to find out after submitting your SIR that you were denied Cali residency?
@selimpride it took about 2 weeks after submitting all my documents
@jnghnbt
im going through the exact same situation with UCSD and im trying to do the appeal, what happened to you since this last post because im considerig going back to CC for a semester or intern for a year then go to a cal state.
