Nonresident for tuition purposes

I am a new transfer student to UCSD and I just got and email from them saying I am a Nonresident for tuition purposes because I have a wire transfers of funds from my parents and my parents are not a CA residents. The money that I have got are from my savings and their not enough to pay my tuition, what should I write in my appeal?
Please Help I am really loosing my educational career.

if your parents aren’t CA residents, there’s probably nothing to appeal. That said, there are nuances to the policy. Why do you believe you should have resident status?

These money were from my savings, so it’s actually my money not an assistance from my parents.

If you are under 24, where your parents live matters.

If your parents are not California residents and you are not considered financially independent <24 years old, then you are considered OOS for tuition purposes.

@Qundah

It doesn’t matter whose money was wired to you. What matters is…where do your parents REALLY reside?

Are they California residents?

As asked by others…what makes you think you qualify for instate residency in CA? Did you graduate from a CA high school? Have your parents resided in CA for well over a year…with you.

Are you under age 24…because if so…all of these things matter.

Where did you reside 12 months ago? What state?

Are you an American citizen? Do you have permanent resident status?

Transfer from where? What other college? Where did you attend high school?

If you are trying to claim that you are financially independent and the money wired to your California account was really yours from say, work earnings, then you could make an appointment with someone in the Registrar’s office to show them the documentation (paystubs?) that you really earned all that money.

Another thought…how much money are we talking about here.

Did you receive need based aid (which is ONLY available to in state residents)? Did you include this money on your financial aid application form? Was it in your account?

If your parents don’t pay California state taxes, and you’re under the age of 24, you have to pay non-resident fees.
It doesn’t matter that your own money was wired to you. It matters where you transferred from and if you have resided, on your own, for two years without attending any university system in California, and paying California income tax.

If you graduated high school in California and attended a community college in California, and can show where the money comes from, go to the bursar’s office today.

My parents live out of the country and they are not a California resident. But I have finished community college in California and I was getting financial aid and pay a resident tuition for 3 years. I am under 24 years old, but when I moved here I was under 18 years old and I couldn’t open a bank account back home before I move.

For the past 3 years I was filing my taxes and no one ever claimed me in his taxes, although my parent never files any taxes because they basically never worked in the united states.

I the money I got from my savings was about 13% of what I needed not more, and I can show a prove that those were my money.

do you guys have any idea of who should I talk to, the person name and the department?

Thank you all for your help.

Sorry, but you have almost no chance of obtaining instate tuition from UC. Community colleges are a lot more flexible with instate fees. Cal State and UC follow the laws.

The rule for self-dependency is that you already own 100% of the funds that you will need, not just 13%. You can appeal to the Residence Deputy, but teh result is unlikely to be in your favor.

Here is the link with the info. And the link for the Residence Deputy is on the bottom of the page. Good luck.

If your parents live out of the country…and you are under 24, it’s highly unlikely YOU can get instate residency status for a UC in California. As noted, the community colleges have different residency requirements for instate status.

Go talk to someone there…but really…you are not an independent student for tuition purposes.

Are you a U.S. citizen or permanent resident? Or do you hold a green card? If not…how would you be eligible for instate tuition in ANY state…since it also sounds like you didn’t graduate from high school here.

I am a green card holder.

From what you have posted…it doesn’t sound like you are eligible for instate status in CA. But go talk to someone at the school. They will clarify this for you…they might need some supporting documents proving your eligibility for instate status…and in CA, usually one of those things is the residency of your parents…
